I've always had a soft spot for this and "It's Impossible" -- in fact, I had originally segued the two in my first draft of this set...

As I've probably mentioned before, I grew up in a showtune/MOR household with a single mom who loved Robert Goulet, Sinatra, and Mr Como. So 1971, with Perry and also Andy Williams making big chart comebacks, was a big year for my mom. Sadly, she wasn't around for "And I Love You So" in '73.

I didn't discover Top 40 radio until the fall of '67, when I was 12.

Gotta pause it for now; I'll finish my commentary later.  Looking forward to the rest of the set!

Wow, you went through 2-1/2 sets today! You get a gold star!  :D

My usual Tuesday listening destination ended early, and it was a slow-ish day at work (finally!). So I had a little more time to write down some comments.
Let's get right to it.

My 2nd 1978 set:

 3. Robert Palmer - You Really Got Me

Sneakin' Sally thru the Kinks' alley.

and I knew I'd heard "Sandra" before but it took Wiki to remind me it's a Barry Manilow tune -- he did it on his 2nd LP.  Lovely lyric, and Dusty of course nails it.

When Guns On The Roof started, I thought it was the Kinks' "The Hard Way" from Schoolboys in Disgrace.  I went and checked, and sure enough, the Clash nicked the rhythm and three of four opening chords for GOTR.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMRtRAzVMpo

(And was it coincidence that the song that followed GOTR was a Kinks cover?)

Someone noticed! ;)

I just found another bit that the Clash nicked from the Kinks. In I'm Not Down from London Calling, at about 0:16 in, they replicate the descending melodic progression from the beginning of Waterloo Sunset, only speeded up a bit.

If you're gonna steal, steal from the best!

 6. Ce Ce Peniston - Finally
 7. Lou Reed - What's Good
(News: Robert Reed death)

FYI, this clip was in the left channel only.  But a fine set, and I'm not usually a '90s kinda guy.  Of course, most of these songs would never make it into a KFOG '92 set.

Yeah, that Robert Reed clip was only on one channel from YouTube - I should have folded the audio down to mono for that.

For this set, I made sure to include a bit more pop/dance/r&b to the mix. FYI, I originally had "Rump Shaker" and Dylan doing "Froggy Went A-Courtin'" in an early draft!  ;D

The '82 set yes. Need to finish off the '71 set still, but my usual Monday listening destination is taking the day off, so I'll knock that out and maybe one of the others at least. Thx for checking!

ETA: Just finished the '71 set. So much to comment on in this one -- the Bad Finger, the Ray Price/Perry Como/Babs crossover troika as well as the Carpenters and Bread -- in a lot of ways it was a very MOR set, but in a good way. I'd never heard Al Green's version of Are You Lonely For Me Baby or the Long John Baldry take on It Ain't Easy either  -- loved both. And the Ringo clip from 200 Motels was nicely placed too.  This was def. one of your best, imo.

Not much love for this one. Just wasn't at all what I was listening to in '92, save for maybe the Lou Reed.  The Morrissey song could have just as easily been the Smithereens.  (I did get a laugh out of the Dennis Leary bit however.)
Let's get right to it.

George sounds like quite the Tea Party candidate in that clip. He's a job creator! ROTFL!
