Lots of nuggets in this one--the Rutles, of course, and I also liked the Adam Schlesinger twin-spin. Fountains of Wayne is a longtime fave, and one of the few bands that came up in the 90s that I still follow -- their last record is one of their best. Also, the Patti Smith reminded me I need to revisit her 90s revival -- she did some good records after Fred died.

Btw, I've also listened to George Jackson #2, but not the Alan O'Day #2.

The Skidoo promo was kinda crazy, if not exactly tuneful.

Geoff was right about the Johnny Cash song--Streets of Laredo redux.

Was the Beach Boys song the one cowritten with Charles Manson? Not exactly Top 40 material.

And that must be the original version of Suspicious Minds--Elvis didn't really change the arrangement much at all, did he?

Funny you chose Kingdom Hall to lead off the set. I'd just heard it the day before this on KUSF In Exile.

When Guns On The Roof started, I thought it was the Kinks' "The Hard Way" from Schoolboys in Disgrace.  I went and checked, and sure enough, the Clash nicked the rhythm and three of four opening chords for GOTR.

(And was it coincidence that the song that followed GOTR was a Kinks cover?)

I didn't realize Heart had gone MOR so early in their career. I didn't think that happened until some time in the early 80s.

Like Mike, I'm curious how many versions of 'Minnie' Cab Calloway recorded over his career. I'm sure he must have done more than that, but that's the one song he's most widely known for.

Loved the WKRP clips. I watched the "Hoodlum Rock" ep last night after I heard this -- as funny as I remember it. Michael Des Barres missed his calling.

The Boz Scaggs was completely new to me. But his catalog is ripe for mining all sorts of nuggets in the 70s -- Runnin' Blue, and perhaps Dinah Flo, to name just two. Yes, that was a hint.

I've always loved that Ray Price tune. It was a couple of years at least before I realized it was a country song that crossed over.

A number of songs here that I know in other versions, specifically the Al Green and Long John Baldry. Did Baldry's It Ain't Easy predate the Bowie/Ziggy version? And is that Faces backing him? It sure sounds as if it were.

In the Carpenters tune, is that oboe or english horn? Either way, a rarity among pop songs.

Love the segue from the D.B. Cooper clip to "It's Impossible." (Another great 71 crossover hit., btw.)

"San Francisco Girls (Return of the Native)" was the only song  by Fever Tree to be played on 10@10, so I dug a little deeper into their album for that one.  "Eleanor Rigby" should have also been credited in that track.

There's actually a soundtrack, composed by Harry Nilsson, which the promo samples a bit from.

Yes, that's the infamous Manson track Dennis Wilson "stole" -- where's Brian Wilson when you need him?

Chips Moman produced the Mark James recording, and he just brought the same arrangement to Elvis when he recorded in Memphis.

Actually, Dog & Butterfly featured rockers on one side and ballads on the other.  RGMike thought the title track was LN, so I dug a little deeper in the album for this ballad.

Like Mike, I'm curious how many versions of 'Minnie' Cab Calloway recorded over his career. I'm sure he must have done more than that, but that's the one song he's most widely known for.

Who knows -- hundreds, maybe?  There maybe several dozen that are probably lost -- I think it was first recorded in 1931!

I've always had a soft spot for this and "It's Impossible" -- in fact, I had originally segued the two in my first draft of this set...

Baldry's predates Bowie's version, and yes, the Faces are backing him on that track (Rod Stewart produced that side of the record, the other side produced by Elton John).  "Take It Easy" was recorded by a bunch of artists, including Three Dog Night and Dave Edmunds.
