who'd'a thunk that Travis Wammack would be the commonality between George Jackson and Alan O'day?!?

The George Jackson credit that floored me was "The Only Way is Up" -- I knew the '80s dance version but had no idea it was written in the early '70s.

Another connection is Dobie Gray -- unfortunately, I don't have the complete "Funky Funky Feelin'" yet.

The Yazz version of "The Only Way Is Up" is in the set -- Otis Clay did the earlier version, I believe.

We fight the version battles all the time with our web application.  It's frustrating when a new version of IE breaks functionality that worked with earlier versions.  We have numerous clients and a fairly complicated app, so making everyone happy isn't easy.

5. Vogues - American Family (1972)
 

Oh. My. Fuckin. GOD! I have been looking for this song for 40 YEARS!!

This is not the version I remember -- that was by a solo singer whose name I've long forgotten, and that version got some NYC airplay in early '73.  I remember assuming it was meant to cash in on the American Family PBS documentary series starring the Louds.  Never knew the Vogues recorded it too.

Cap'n you really made my day/week/month with that one.  Wowsers.

ETA: per this profile from Songwriter magazine... "American Family" was recorded by... Larry Carlton. The guitarist?  He sings too? Answer: yes... here it is and this is def the version I heard on WPIX 40 years ago:

this was NTM -- sounds like he wrote it for Helen Reddy.

I'm glad I helped you locate the song!  The version you remember is from Larry Carlton's Singing/Playing album, which also includes another Alan O'Day composition "Easy Evil" (apparently, that was O'Day's most popular, based on the number of covers).

ETA2: now I'm on to the Jackson 2 set -- hearing the Osmonds tune in the midst of all that gritty soul is (a) kind of hilarious and (b) making me wish Ann Peebles or BB King or somebody had covered it.
