These have been readied for awhile, so I just archived them directly to MediaFire.

who'd'a thunk that Travis Wammack would be the commonality between George Jackson and Alan O'day?!?

The George Jackson credit that floored me was "The Only Way is Up" -- I knew the '80s dance version but had no idea it was written in the early '70s.

Another connection is Dobie Gray -- unfortunately, I don't have the complete "Funky Funky Feelin'" yet.

The Yazz version of "The Only Way Is Up" is in the set -- Otis Clay did the earlier version, I believe.

Okay, RGMike, I've added SoundCloud links.  Enjoy!

No, I thought it might have been too repetitive. I can post them to SoundCloud later tonight.

No chance you could install Chrome or FF on the side for your personal use? Corporate IT policy can be maddening at best.

Nope. Can't install anything without approval.  IE 7 -- I mean, my gawd I have 10 at home! --  is just ridiculous.

We fight the version battles all the time with our web application.  It's frustrating when a new version of IE breaks functionality that worked with earlier versions.  We have numerous clients and a fairly complicated app, so making everyone happy isn't easy.

Yes, both of the ones on the retrocapnjack page I've heard and downloaded the '75 (loved hearing the Major Harris for the first time in ages).

And I'm catching the two on the regular capnjack side this afternoon. So you should be clear to put up a fresh batch by later today. Thanks for checking!

5. Vogues - American Family (1972)

Oh. My. Fuckin. GOD! I have been looking for this song for 40 YEARS!!

This is not the version I remember -- that was by a solo singer whose name I've long forgotten, and that version got some NYC airplay in early '73.  I remember assuming it was meant to cash in on the American Family PBS documentary series starring the Louds.  Never knew the Vogues recorded it too.

Cap'n you really made my day/week/month with that one.  Wowsers.

ETA: per this profile from Songwriter magazine... "American Family" was recorded by... Larry Carlton. The guitarist?  He sings too? Answer: yes... here it is and this is def the version I heard on WPIX 40 years ago:

9. Anne Murray - Blue Finger Lou (1975)

this was NTM -- sounds like he wrote it for Helen Reddy.

ETA2: now I'm on to the Jackson 2 set -- hearing the Osmonds tune in the midst of all that gritty soul is (a) kind of hilarious and (b) making me wish Ann Peebles or BB King or somebody had covered it.

I'm glad I helped you locate the song!  The version you remember is from Larry Carlton's Singing/Playing album, which also includes another Alan O'Day composition "Easy Evil" (apparently, that was O'Day's most popular, based on the number of covers).

Actually, the song was first recorded by Spencer Wiggins in 1970:

It probably would have sounded better in my set.  :)

The 1978 version is done disco style; the 1980 Blues Brothers rendition is done straight.
