TANC - last night, on a whim, I created a pseudo 10@10 for 1996 using Renee's intro/outro and the usual KFOG sounds.  Here's what I came up with:

 1. Paul Westerberg - Love Untold
 2. Tina Turner - Confidential
(Commercial: M2 watchers)
 3. Beck - Lord Only Knows
(TV: NewsRadio - betting next song on the radio sucks)
 4. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Asshole
(Johnny Cash talks about Beck)
 5. Johnny Cash - Rowboat
(Hit number 6-6-6...)
 6. The Quad City DJ's - C'mon N' Ride It (The Train)
(And now for something completely different...)
 7. Squirrel Nut Zippers - Bad Businessman
(Movie: The Rock - Nic Cage is a Beatlemaniac with a vinyl fetish)
 8. Elvis Costello & The Attractions - Shallow Grave
(Movie: Bound - cup of coffee)
 9. Prince - Dinner With Delores
10. Liz Phair - Rocket Boy

Using Audacity and some YouTube clips, I think I did better job than today's effort (if I do say so myself).  If anyone wants to listen to it, I can upload it somewhere.  ;)

You've set a low bar for yourself. Looks like an interesting mix.

TANC: Funny that you chose a song from EC's All This Useless Beauty to include in your fantasy set. After not hearing it for more than a decade, I just pulled that album out for a revisit the day before yesterday, and am wondering what took me so long. It's held up really well--some very nicely crafted songs on there. Also notable as the last Attractions album. Following this one Bruce Thomas got the sack and the band morphed into the Imposters, with Davey Farragher on bass. </costellofanatic>
Let's get right to it.

1. B/D

10. C/F

This sums things up pretty well.  Normally I'd also give #6 a B for necessary, but in the context of being the set's only rarity, it drops it to a D.

listening now..  nice job!

I'm not a huge Westerberg fan and didn't dig that song -- at least the tune.  But I didn't play close attn to his lyrics.  Which I'm sure are great.  It's just that.. I don't know.. what if I don't like the sound?  will I ever REALLY listen?  REALLY?  ;)

Love the Tina -- who's singing backup for Tina? Is the Neil Tennant?

That Beck song is great, too.  Dayum. Can you please get a job at KFOG?

The News Radio clip:   I think I get it --  Andy Dick's character is the "Asshole" that Petty sings about?  :)   Because only as asshole would say Wichita Lineman sucks.  It has been scientifically proven to be one of the best songs ever written.

Is this one of the songs that Rick Rubin made Johnny Cash (Cow) lay down?  B/c that stuff is awesome.   Sounds like every single guitar amp in that song has a torn speaker cone. love it.

Quad City DJs. This is one of my faves from this year.

Ah, Squirrel Nut Zippers.  I remember the swing thing happening. I went to the Brown Derby in LA one night and the joint was jumping.  The Rock: I sa that when the Century Westfield theaters first opened.: They had this wonderful deal: five bucks for all their movies all day long, and the movies were all SF themed ones.  The Rock, It Came From beneath the Sea, Bullit, maybe Vertigo?

I like that Prince and Liz Phair song., which reminds me of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0933KDaWATM

excellent job, Cap'n!

Yes, the tune was written by the Pet Shop Boys for Tina.  The Pet Shop Boys demo of the song was released on the compilation Format.

As Dave Foley's character says, "I love that song!"  :)

Yes it is, from his album Unchained.

The Beck/Petty/Cash numbers were part of a Beck-written trio of songs that I strung together as a theme, if anyone was wondering.
