Perhaps this means one more seat for the Dems in November...

...but after you read this, answer me this question - wouldn't he win in a landslide if he represented South Beach?

ah, those GOP Family Values...

someone on Outsports just said "Foley has long been rumored to be gay" but I don't know if that's true.  He'd do well in S Beach if he pulled a McGreevey and admitted to being "a gay American"   (He actually represents West Palm Beach -- lots of rich old Republican queens there, I'll wager!)  I'll be interested to find out how rabidly anti-gay his voting record is.

From Wikipedia, FWIW:

"In 2003, Foley was widely considered the Republican frontrunner for Bob Graham's Senate seat, especially after Graham had announced his retirement. However, longstanding rumors surfaced that Foley was either gay or bisexual and was in a longterm relationship with another man. The story was initially published only in the gay press;[1] [2] then the New Times broke the story in the mainstream press. Other papers, including the New York Press,[3] then addressed the topic. Foley held a press conference to denounce the "revolting" rumors and stated that his sexual orientation was unimportant"

also per Wiki-P, he's considered moderate-to-lib on gay issues and is pro-choice as well.

Interesting.  But what really piques my interest is that I'm quite sure that A) the Dems never thought they had a shot at his seat & B) if the Repugnicans couldn't get Tom DeLay's name switched off the Texas ballot two months ago, there's no way they can get Foley's name off with only 5 weeks to go.  Therefore C) the Dem candidate in that district is now for all intents and purposes running upposed.  The Repugnicans now have an even smaller margin of error.

Indeed, and right on. I'm certainly not interested in "claiming" the guy as part of the gay community -- not if he used the word "revolting" to describe the gay rumor when all the while he was propositioning 16-year-olds.  And indeed, the boy's age is the real issue here, as far as why Foley resigned: he was chairman of the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children! er... HELLO???

Alas, thus spake AP (via CNN.com):

"According to The Associated Press, Florida Republicans could name a replacement candidate for Foley as soon as Monday. Foley's name will appear on the midterm ballots and cannot be changed, but any votes for Foley will count toward the party's choice, AP reported."

(I have no idea why this is so.)

I think it may vary from state to state.  Remember when Ashcroft got beat by a dead guy in Missouri?

And I'm proud to say that both my parents voted for that dead guy.

TANC of the week: Just caught McGreevey on the Daily Show replay from last nite. Stewart asked him : "Presidential Election 2008 -- Who comes out of the closet first? Hillary Clinton or Condi Rice?"

So I caught the Daily Show coverage of the Foley thing -- basically they devoted the whole show to it, as (fortuitously) Trent Lott was the scheduled guest!  It was all terriffic.  I had not seen the clip of Newt Gingrich on some Sunday show saying that the Repugs didn't rush to judgement about Foley because they didn't want to be accused of "gay bashing" (!?!) and then Jon Stewart followed that by saying "Hmmm... what would make people accuse them of that? maybe the fact that the GOP has spent years equating gay people with child molesters?"

Then on Colbert, his guest was Michael (Moneyball) Lewis, plugging his new book The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game, which is about a black ghetto kid, son of a crack-addict single mom, who was adopted by a rich white Evangelical Christian couple, and how his life completely turns around (learns football, IQ goes up 30 points, etc).  In a complete throwaway comment, Lewis mentions that they took his book to the Christian Bookseller's Convention (where you'd think it would be very popular) and -- get this -- it got a cool reception from many of the attendees because it has the word "evolution" in the title.  Oh those wacky Fundies.

Did anyone else catch Tom DeLay's somewhat-recent letter-writing campaign urging people to help make country singer Sara Evans the winner of "Dancing With the Stars"?  I guess hers is the kind of marriage America needs to protect from 'mos:

http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/Music/10/13/people.evans.ap/index.html

Sorry to drag Ms. Evans into this -- I'm sure she's a nice gal and didn't ask for DeLay to be on her side -- but I'm feeling schadenfredic something fierce today.  My ever-raging moods, for ya.

"Evans alleges in divorce papers that her husband committed adultery, was verbally and emotionally abusive, drank excessively and frequently watched pornography in their home. [He]... ran for Congress as a Republican from Oregon's 5th District in 2002"

Sounds like the perfect GOP candidate to me.

BTW didya see the clip of Pat Buchanan repeatedly calling Mark Foley a "flamer"?

I've always liked Keith Olberman a lot.  But now I can honestly say he is my hero.

The text is on this link, but the video clip is well worth watching because KO is truly passionate in his delivery.  It is about 7 minutes long.
