well, it wouldn't be late '80s without the Cure or INXS or REM so -- thank you Robert Smith for defeating Mecha-Streisand!

No Tinita T, or Was/Not Was or Neneh Cherry... again.

once again I'll say that even tho' recent sets haven't been good, they've been long.

I'll give a BOS for Stone Roses. This song is NTM.

At least you won't get any complaints from Yogi Berra.

It was NTM too, but meh.  HM, for rarity.

<shakes fist in air> ::)
Their stuff sounds the same because this is the only song that ever gets played on 10@10!

This set didn't look too bad.  I'll have to catch the replay.

IE was very close with his predictions. (89 and 81)

Tone Loc (an actual pop bustout!) saved it for me, but a few too many LNs for my taste.

01/20/12 - Friday! Runnin' Down a Dream in...1989!!

 1. Tom Petty - Runnin' Down a Dream
(Sports: Super Bowl XXIII - 49ers vs. Bengals - It's Montana-to-John Taylor for the game-winning TD with 34 seconds to go!)
 2. Tone Loc - Funky Cold Medina (B.O.S-3 Way Tie!)
(Movie: Batman - Jack Nicholson as The Joker - "You can't make an omelette without breaking some eggs")
 3. Love and Rockets - So Alive
 4. Michael Penn - No Myth
(News: Peter Jennings reporting - The "Velvet Revolution" - Communism is ending in the Czech Republic)
 5. The B-52's - Roam
(TV: Roseanne - The loving Conners family is having dinner together)
 6. 10,000 Maniacs - Eat for Two
 7. Don Henley - The Heart of the Matter
(Movie: Batman - The Joker: "Gentlemen! Let's broaden our minds!")
 8. The Rolling Stones - Mixed Emotions (B.O.S. 3 Way Tie!)
(Movie: Dead Poets Society - Looking at old photos of grads from past/ "Listen, you hear it? Carpe, carpe diem - seize the day, boys!")
 9. The Cure - Pictures of You (B.O.S. 3 Way Tie!)
10. The Stone Roses - She Bangs The Drums

I just "got" the "Dead Poets"-->"Pictures of You" segue.  On the plus side: no FYC!

Methinks if the Niners win we'll hear 82 and 90 in the next two weeks. Of course, 90 comes up every three weeks anyway so that's not saying a lot.

Belated LN5 to the Cure tune -- DC played it at 4:30. Honestly, that's just silly.

Radical Ratings: 1989

Good

A
The Cure
Michael Penn

B
Stone Roses
Tone Loc
Don Henley

C
10000 Maniacs
Love & Rockets
B-52s (I'm not sure if it's inherently bland or just sounds this way after hearing it for the 10000th time)
Tom Petty
Rolling Stones

Necessary

A
Tone Loc

B
The Rolling Stones
Stone Roses (Come to think of it, RS>SR or SR>RS would have been clever)

C
Love & Rockets (A perfect example of how a good segue can save a completely unnecessary song.  Funky Cold Medina > this = worth two grades up.)
The Cure (Ditto, with the Dead Poets Society clip.  But really, one of the deeper tracks off of Disintegration would have been even more necessary.)

D
Tom Petty
Michael Penn
10,000 Maniacs (Sigh...I know we've only heard this once before but something as bland as this really shouldn't make more than one appearance)
Don Henley (Likewise...we haven't heard this in awhile, but it didn't really add anything to this set)

F
The B-52s

Don Henley must die.
Jeez!  Such vitriol!  I think the opening 12-string guitar chords to this song are classic, and provide an excellent sense of the wistfulness of the song.

Davefish was quoting (in jest, I assume) the lyrics of an amusingly nasty Mojo Nixon song.
