Around '78-'79 was the time when I listened to AT40 on a weekly basis -- I was ten. I remember pretty much all of these songs climbing up the chart, especially from the first half of the year, but i can't remember which ones I was rooting for. Sultans of Swing for sure, but I think it stalled out at 4, and John Stewart's Gold, which got to 5. Probably Billy Joel and Foreigner, too, and maybe the singles from The Long Run, based on lingering love for Hotel California. It is wild to see three Bee Gees songs at number one within a few months of each other and remember that their album was considered a disappointment. That's how huge they were in '78. Or maybe it wasn't a commercial disappointment, it's just that the songs aren't nearly as good as the SNF hits.

Your 1979 is my 1985 (although in my case it was John Leader's Countdown America - didn't start listening to AT40 until late 1986).

I was thisclose to requesting "Love You Inside Out" -- one of the most underrated #1s of that period, IMHO.

Your 1979 is my 1985 (although in my case it was John Leader's Countdown America - didn't start listening to AT40 until late 1986).

1984 for me.  I remember watching Casey's AT10 show on TV.  Or was it top twenty?

In the Morey era, '65 thru '85 were pretty swell. '86 on up were kinda painful just because Dave was so reluctant to play pop cheeze or R&B after the mid-'80s... which is why '87 and '89  were the most-dreaded years on his watch. AL (pre-DC) really made '86 thru the '90s interesting, and those years have suffered most from DC's tinkering.  I'm hoping Tuesday's '87 set was a harbinger rather than an anomaly.
