Wear Purple on October 20 for Spirit Day #SpiritDay  :)

Millions of Americans wear purple on Spirit Day as a sign of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth and to speak out against bullying.

Mark your calendars!  My son's preschool is having their 41st annual auction benefit on Saturday, November 5th (6-10pm) at the Janet Pomeroy Center near Lake Merced.  Tickets are $20/pair and $10 for a bottomless glass of wine or beer.  Gourmet food, and live music, to boot!   ;)

There's over 1000 auction items, including a Maui getaway, a week at a Paris apartment (great location), amongst many quality items.

If you're interested in going and or have something to donate, please let me know! (I can provide a formal letter and or tax ID info)  Oh, and I think a "special KFOG personality" will (hopefully) emcee the event.  To be confirmed.  Fingers crossed!

I would love for you all to be there.  Maybe we can make this a club get-together!   :) :D ;D

*I'll post a link to the online auction catalog as soon as it's up.  I'm the person processing all the items...there's some good stuff with low starting bid prices.

Renee from the KFOG Morning Show will emcee the live auction part of our event!  Confirmed!  For the record, I approached AL first and she pretty much agreed to do it.  But then I found out that Renee went to auctioneering school.  Our preschool really pushed for Renee upon hearing that.  I'm hoping AL will show up anyway.  Hope you guys can too!  It's gonna be great fun with fabulous merchandise.  Let me know if and when you'd like to buy tickets.

Oh, and a big thanks to Lattegirl for hooking us up!   :)

Sounds like it should be an evening to remember! Wish I could be there, but the commute from OR would be a bitch. Hope it's a rousing success for the cause!
I forgot to mention that the dad who is in charge of the food/kitchen during the event is the head chef at Zuni Cafe.  Some of the food and wine was donated by Zuni, as well as other fab SF establishments.   :)

Here's where you can start previewing the auction items.  It's constantly being updated, so keep checking back:  http://www.glenridgecoop.org/auction/
Here's some great Glenridge auction items that might pique your interest:

- 2 orchestra seats to any show at the Fox Theatre
- 2 tickets to Feist at the Warfield
- 2 tickets to The National or Sara Barielles or Lykke Li
- 2 tickets to any show at the Fillmore
- 2 tickets to Stephen Stills at the Regency Ballroom

More auction items here:  http://glenridgeauction.org/auction/shop.php
(We're expecting a huge slew of new items on Sunday, which is the last item drop-off day)

Renee from the KFOG morning show will be the live auction emcee.  That Paris apartment is an awesome deal.

If any of you are going, please PM me on FB, so I can send you a SASE so I can send you a ticket and get credit for it.  Thanks!  Sorry for all the messages and repeat info.

I mentioned this very briefly back in 2008 but I need to revisit because it's still bothering me.  I lost a really good friend in August of '08 -- not because he died, but because he became a right-wing nutjob.

I met Andy (he's a couple years older than me) at ABC in the early '80s. He was a lifelong moderate-to-liberal Dem; the only Democrat from a family of wealthy Republicans. I can still remember him arguing with his stockbroker parents, who thought Reagan was the greatest thing since sliced bread.  We'd stayed in touch after he quit ABC in '85, we both lived in Queens and saw a lot of movies together. And after I moved out here we still communicated, first by phone and later by email.  In 2007 when I was in NYC on vacay, we had lunch and he casually mentioned that "I've stopped reading the NY Times and cancelled my subscriptions to Time and Newsweek because they're all biased". Uh, OK... and where are you getting your news from now? "The NY Post and The Weekly Standard." I was rather gobsmacked.  "Oh, of course", I said, "because, y'know, Bill Kristol and Rupert Murdoch -- they're not biased AT ALL!" And I changed the subject. I didn't want to argue politics with someone I'd been friends with for 25 years while I was on vacation.

I studiously avoided the subject of politics with Andy for the next year or so, and in August of '08 he emailed, all excited because he'd posted a comment on Michelle Malkin's blog (!), and she'd liked it so much she put it in the "Comment of the Day" box at the top of the page. He was fairly creaming his jeans over this.  Turns out that was the day that Obama announced Biden as his running mate; the hideous Ms. Malkin had spent the day saying nasty things about Biden and inviting others to do likewise. I sat there, staring at the computer screen. WTF had happened to this guy? I decided I could no longer pretend that it didn't matter. I wrote back, saying "Jeezus, man, you used to make FUN of people like Malkin. If you're gonna hang out with conservatives, couldn't you at least pick some SMART ones?"

I never heard from him again.

I check his Facebook page every 6 months or so, just to see if he's alive. Yesterday when I looked there, he had links to Sarah Palin (!), a group called "Let's Stop Blaming Bush For What Obama Does" (!!) and his profile pic is an Eagle-in-front-of-the-Flag thing that even Stephen Colbert would consider over-the-top. The Andy that I used to know was sweet, caring, funny and smart -- too smart to be swallowing the sort of nonsense Malkin and Palin churn out. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Revisiting this post again (some of you newbies weren't here in 2010) because my friend Andy, described above, passed away last week. He was 57, just a year older than me and not the healthiest guy in the world. We hadn't spoken since August of 2008. So I'll never really know what was behind his bizarre transformation. I published a version of the above as an essay on Facebook a year or so ago. Sad.

Good luck tonight--hope you pack the house and make a pile o' $$$! I'll be thinking of y'all while I'm seeing Jay Farrar in PDX.

PS And hope you get a good turnout from the KFOG airstaff, if you know what I mean and I think you do.
Let's get right to it.

It was really great meeting everyone.  Haaaay!
Man, I had my camera in my purse, too.  Damnit.  Next time, group shot!

Oh, I had a chat with Renee about KFOG, DC and the future of Kaboom.  She's super cool and very approachable.  She did an awesome job with the live auction!

Yes, good Haaaaay vibes all around.  Free flowing wine and unlimited brownies/truffles/etc. certainly helped!  A guy I work with was there, and he and his partner bid successfully on a number of things, including a week-long stay in a Paris apartment and the Joe Montana autographed football.

Betty Botter had some butter,
"But," she said, "this butter's bitter.
If I bake this bitter butter,
it would make my batter bitter.
But a bit of better butter--
that would make my batter better."

Congrats, glad the event was a success!!  Sorry I wasn't available, perhaps the Club might have a meet-up in Dec, in downtown SF on a weekday eve or a Sat.  A holiday get-together!

We do have a club get together thread. In past years we have had lunch and then wandered over to Amoeba for some musical delight.

This morning at 5:48 (2 minutes before my alarm usually goes off) the phone rang; it was my boss saying "they're rioting in Oakland, so stay home". I rolled over and went back to sleep.

When I finally got up and was showered and shaved 3 hours later, I called the employee hot-line which is now saying Kaiser is open as of 10am.  My supervisor is trying to find out whether I really need to come in for a half-day at this point.
