Well, it's 10:07 on Friday night, I'm still in the office.

I'm out of here until next Thursday, down in Vegas for the big User Group all these thousands of hours of work have pointed to.  IF our next build succeeds!

*fingers crossed*
Does everyone but me know what company you work for?  Good luck on this build.

a quick FYI: Monday (10/30) is a vacay day for me -- my annual physical. So I'll be popping in during Dave's set but not before.

FYI gang: I start Jury Duty on Monday, and I've called the automated instructions phone # and I actually have to show up. So no posts all day Monday.  I do intend to bring my Walkman and hope to catch all or part of Dave's set as well as bits'n'pieces of Judge's show.

I lucked out 2 years ago and didn't have to go the entire week, but I guess that's why I'm at the top of the list this time around.

Did I ever tell you how I got out of jury duty 1.5 years ago? This might not work so well in SF, though.  I was sitting with 15-20 other jurors for the initial (voir dire?) questions to determine who'd be the actual jurors.  I actually thought it'd be enjoyable b/c it was a simple case and the prosecuting attorney was HAWT.  But he asked everyone in turn about their past back injuries.  I replied that I've thrown mine out a few times, roughly once a year in recent years.
He: Were you insured?
Me: No.
He: Did you use any pain-relief medication?
Me: Does pot count?
He: (scratches me off list)

PS: Ian Dury should have called one of his albums Dury Juty.  No he shouldn't've.

Don't forget Sir Mix-a-Lot's lost classic, "Jury Booty".

Dury Duty would've worked, though.

"I am not a number -- I am a free man!"

Spent the morning hanging out in the Jury Room, reading and listening to 10@10. Shortly before noon, they called my name for a panel that would convene after lunch. Came back after lunch to the courtroom, where we sat around some more. Then the judge came out and said "you'll notice there are no lawyers present... they just, in the last few minutes, agreed to waive a jury and try the case before a judge only. The good news is, you folks get to go home".  Applause from the entire room. Easiest jury service ever.

Wow, that's amazing. I've always had to at least sit thru the jury selection process, yet so far have never been chosen. Hopefully your company pays for jury service, so you didn't lose a day's pay (or vacation time) in the bargain.
Let's get right to it.

I may be a bit scarce here today--we have a situation at our office that's taking precedence over most of my thoughts.  One of our editors, James Kim, and his family have been missing since last Saturday when they were supposed to be driving from Portland OR to Gold Beach, which is on 101 in southwestern OR. More info here:

Think good thoughts if you would--James is a really nice, gentle guy who is an absolute expert about digital audio.

Thanks.

Oh dear.  Sending love and safety vibrations.  Hoping for the best.  And this is part of why I love you guys - your wonderful compassion for all those around you.  May we all stay strong, and may James and his family return to enjoy a lovely Christmas.
