The Killers' new one, "Human" was mentioned on another thread; here's some phenomenal design work on their MTV Europe Video Awards perf:

Agreed, though, on the WTF-ness of "or are we dancer?"

per comments on several blogs, it's a Hunter S Thompson reference! Thompson wrote an essay asking (rhetorically) if America was producing a generation of "dancers"... living in a fantasy, all moving to the same beat, all for show.

It certainly resonates in a gay way, as gay culture (to me) seems to be more dancer than human.

ETA: Thompson also once said "I feel the same way about disco as I do about herpes."

Yeah, very amusing. Except when he finally gets down to talking about the album he's allegedly reviewing, this is all he has to say:

It's a bit overproduced, isn't it?

Gee, tell me something I don't know.

I'm still amazed that guy is able to keep his job.
Let's get right to it.

I picture Joel Selvin sitting there saying to himself "well... *I* don't get it but apparently this snarkiness thing is all the rage with the kids".   But my favorite line was "Barry Manilow, The Greatest Songs of the Eighties: Oh really, Barry? Where's "Girlfriend in a Coma"?

OK, not exactly new music per se, but a new collection of songs by a very worthy artist: The Kinks are getting their first box set:

Rob Harvilla of the Village Voice also didn't get the "Are we human, or are we dancer?" line; here's his entertaining review of the Killers' latest:

Selvin doesn't get a lot of things, esp music after 1976.  I understand why people hate Aidin, but this review of Chinese Democracy was great in its form -- can't say anything about its content, though, but I suspect I'll never hear the whole thing anyway.

Agreed, as a gag it was pretty funny. But there are probably a fair number of Chronicle readers out there who want to actually know something more about the record than "it's a bit overproduced." If the Chron doesn't run another actual *review* of it, they're going to be forced to go elsewhere. And in these days of dwindling readership, you don't want to give anyone a reason not to read your paper (or website).

Maybe Aidin needs to go work for Jon Stewart or something.
Let's get right to it.

so, he's never heard of that newfangled interweb? or the Google?  Seriously, I'm astounded at anybody (much less professionals) who post stuff that could be investigated in less than 90 seconds.

Anyone catch that new Chuck Prophet song that KFOG played a couple minutes ago (Freckle Song?) Its "uh-oh" refrain is copped directly from BeBop Deluxe's Panic in the World.

ETA: I see from the "just played" section of the KFOG page that it's on the LFTA disc this year.
Let's get right to it.

Some music DVD releases, FYI:

"The Who At Kilburn: 1977"
Long-lost footage of iconic rockers The Who made it to DVD Nov. 18, when this two-disc set showcasing a pair of decades-old live performances hit store shelves. Get a glimpse of their 1977 invite-only show at Gaumont State Theatre in Kilburn, London-- one of drummer Keith Moon's last live performances. The digitally restored and remastered video is a must-see for serious Who fans. The second disc features the group's 1969 London Coliseum gig, a never-before-seen performance, including the first-ever recording of the rock opera "Tommy."

Elton John "Red Piano-Deluxe"
The Rocket Man's long-running production at Las Vegas' Caesar's Palace, dubbed "The Red Piano," is now available on DVD for all to enjoy. The three-disc set includes a live hour-and-a-half performance of the show, which encompasses many classics (including "Benny and the Jets," "Tiny Dancer," "Candle In The Wind," "I'm Still Standing"). A short documentary of the living legend fills out the second disc, along with a backstage look at director David La Chapelle's contributions to the show, while the third is a 13-song audio collection of Elton favorites.
