I'm late to the party (as was KFOG) on this One Eskimo song, "Kandi"  -- holy crap, it samples Candi Staton's "He called Me Baby"! I'm not the biggest sampling fan, but in this case: Genius!

Oddly, that was like the one song per year that KFOG actually wasn't late on  (they added it back when it was around #30 on the chart as opposed to #1 or #2) -- although, they did lay off it for awhile and just recently started re-spinning it again.

Well, this morning was the first time I've heard it -- if they've been playing it it must've been in "light rotation", unlike stuff like "Hey Soul Sister" or "21 Guns".  But I've seen it listed on The Peak's "just played" feature for months.

But speaking of late,  KFOG sets a new low; they just added 1901. ::)  After playing it on their new music hour for what...a year?

That song has been hovering between positions 80 and 100 on the Hot 100 for about 20 weeks now.  I wish KFOG (and others) had given it a stronger push.

*LOVE* that song (Kandi).  Heard it on KFOG back in Nov, discovered the Candi Staton original the same day, but only posted on blasted Facebook (where none of my friends care anyways).  Sorry, next time I'll post here.

Here's some non-broken links to nice videos:
Cute animated video (part of a series?):  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYT0WWqvMMk
More conventional video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_tBHoRaxns (with a more live sounding mix)

Re Candi Staton:

Dug around and found the amazing sample source, from 1970 (not 2007):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cri481xXtlU

Heck, it's not just a sample -- the guitar part is exactly the same, as well as pretty much the entire groove. Yeesh. (And yes, it's originally a Patsy Cline tune.)

As far as how heavy the rotation... I took a look at http://www.rudebadmood.com/foglist (note to self -- add a way to create permalinks to searches) and lately it's getting about 2 spins a day.  That's actually "heavy" for KFOG.  February 20 was when it started ramping up.  Prior to that it was a few times a week.

Re: KFOG rotation.  Their top spins are currently Foo Fighters "Wheels", Snow Patrol "Just Say Yes", and Kings of Leon "Use Somebody".  None of those songs gets played more than 3 times a day.

Contrast this with a typical "pop" station where you'll hear the top songs spun upwards of 5-7 times a day.

Top 15 (for approximately the past two weeks):

  35 FOO FIGHTERS       WHEELS
34 SNOW PATROL        JUST SAY YES
34 KINGS OF LEON      USE SOMEBODY
  31 PEARL JAM  JUST BREATHE
  29 NORAH JONES        CHASING PIRATES
  29 DAVID GRAY FUGITIVE
  28 TRAIN      HEY SOUL SISTER
28 DAVE MATTHEWS      YOU & ME
  25 ONE ESKIMO KANDI
  24 JOHN MAYER HEARTBREAK WARFARE
23 WEEZER     IF YOU'RE WONDERING IF..
21 DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE        MEET ME ON THE EQUINOX
  16 AVETT BROTHERS     I & LOVE & YOU
15 AIRBORNE TOXIC EVENT       SOMETIME AROUND MIDNIGHT
  14 FRAY       YOU FOUND ME

Oh, re: samples.  This is a great resource:  http://www.whosampled.com/artist/

Is there a similar resource somewhere for snippets that are replicated in a different song, but not digitally sampled?

For example, if you listen to the first 10 seconds of this famous 1964 jazz composition, you will very clearly hear recognizable elements used in big '70's hits by two quite different artists.

OK, one's a dead ripoff of this tune, not even changed a little bit by the Dan. What's the second one?

Jazzy hip-hop group US3 (they were actually on the Blue Note label, which presumably made it a lot easier for them to clear samples) famously sampled (and credited!) "Song For My Father":

http://www.whosampled.com/sample/view/11176/Us3-Eleven%20Long%20Years_Horace%20Silver-Song%20for%20My%20Father/

In the "You Might Also Like" sidebar on that page, link to a couple of Miles Davis tunes that sample (or reference?) Donald Byrd and Ahmad Jamal.  But with jazz, this kind of thing has been going on forever.

There was a pretty great story on the current state of sampling (and its history) on On The Media.  Check it:

http://www.onthemedia.org/transcripts/2010/03/12/02

I have Girl Talk's Night Ripper and Feed the Animals and they are frigging amazing, IMHO.  Samples here:
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=girl+talk

Also here (sorry for the nasty link):
http://music.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=music.popupplayer&sindex=7.7&shuffle=true&amix=false&pmix=false&plid=1164&artid=1696012&profid=6078136&friendid=6078136&sseed=71104&ptype=3&stime=0&ap=1&rpeat=false

Specifically, it is amazing to hear rappers atop of Carole King's "It's Too Late" in Girl Talk's "Give Me a Beat".

And thanks to Wikipedia, there are meticulous breakdowns of all the samples:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feed_the_Animals#8._.22Give_Me_a_Beat.22_-_4:12

I forget where I heard this.  Erykah Badu meets Gwen Stefani = Leela James:  http://lala.com/zjl9

Sharon Jones on SNL w/ some white dude:
http://www.hulu.com/watch/124870/saturday-night-live-michael-buble---baby-youve-got-what-it-takes

An actually funny SNL bit (my theory is that it's really only fun now when it's actually *not* live) featuring Jon Hamm on sax:
http://www.hulu.com/watch/124875/saturday-night-live-digital-short-the-curse

And then the other day I was listening to KSCU and their long-time DJ Faco blew my mind with songs I'd never heard:

James Brown's "Man In The Glass":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbvSSRQ_jsA
Clutch's "Electric Worry":  http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=clutch+electric+worry
The Sunny Era's "Set Me Free":  http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=set+me+free+sunny+era (Sample only, sorry. Different full song here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdgF5EAxST0)

And one of the best rap group names I've heard in a long time:  Haiku D'Etat. With some smooth, fast rapping: http://www.last.fm/music/Haiku%20D'Etat/_/Mike,%20Aaron%20and%20Eddie

He also played "Help I'm Alive" by Metric, which apparently is pretty hot on the college charts (as if these things still exist):
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=help+i'm+alive

But what really was amazing was to hear this on the radio:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7cKBtpBoIs

Mingus's Fables of Faubus.  I'd never heard it.  I felt like a noob.

Mark was raving about that song when I was in town last fall; I'm more a fan of another single of theirs, "Gimme Sympathy."  They should be bigger.

KITS & KSJO are well into playing their newest single, "Gold, Guns, Girls".  A couple mornings ago I woke up with it in my head at 5:30.

Next Tuesday they are doing an unplugged appearance at Ex'pression College courtesy of KSJO, and then they have a sold-out show that night, but I forget which venue.

Suddenly I'm a fan of M.I.A. -- her comments about Lady Gaga really nail it, methinks:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfgate/detail?blogid=7&entry_id=60904

"She models herself on Grace Jones and Madonna, but the music sounds like 20-year-old Ibiza music, you know? She's not progressive, but she's a good mimic. She sounds more like me than I [bleep] do! That's a talent and she's got a great team behind her, but she's the industry's last stab at making itself important -- saying, 'You need our money behind you, the endorsements, the stadiums'. Respect to her, she's keeping a hundred thousand people in work, but my belief is: Do it yourself."

heh, I agree.  I like M.I.A. and I dig the pop nuggets Gaga spits out, too.  I used to be one of those Gaga haters, thinking she was lame, but that was before I actually *heard* some of her songs:  they're fun, they move, they get the job done.  (Although that one song of hers about her not-answering-her-cell-phone-b/c-she's-on-the-dance-floor-so-quit-calling-me-dude is completely unnecessary.  I mean, just turn the phone off and you don't have to sing the song at all, Lady!
