The Peak week of 10/24/11
« on: October 24, 2011, 07:37:01 AM »
Mon 10/24/11: 1994

What's the frequency, Rob?

Toad, Nirvana, Oasis, Hole, Stones. Page & Plant geta  VHM for a live "Gallows Pole" -- if anybody knows poles, it's Percy. BOS Ed Wood.

WOS Live, "I Alone" -- what a f--ing godawful band.

WOS2 Cranberries "Zombie" -- Rob must've been watching AMC all day yesterday.

This show seems like it might be the best non-KFOG 10@10. Sentimentality and homerism aside, RGMike, which of the two do you think is better?

KFOG's has always been the first and best, clearly  -- even if DC is doing his best to dumb it down lately. The Peak's is in 2nd place; Rob Arrow, the host, is roughly my age and grew up listening to the same radio stations I did in NYC, so (esp in '60s/'70s/'80s) he will always pull out a NY-based obscurity. He's at his best in late-'70s/early-'80s sets where he tends to favor CBGBs-flavored punk/new wave and he loves him some Garland Jeffreys and Southside Johnny. His sets are also month-specific, as in "this is what was on the radio in Oct of 1977". Which cuts down on repetition, for one thing.

The Drive and The Sound are both Classic Rock stations, owned by the same people and draw on the same database of songs. It's rare that they play anything too obscure. Austin "Bob" is one of those "Jack"-format stations and their 9@9 is the most pop-chart-oriented.

We used to listen to a 10@10 in Boulder, CO on KBCO -- it was also right up there with KFOG's, as far as playing interesting forgotten songs. They discontinued it a couple years ago, sadly, as did KINK in Portland (DC's old station).

Thanks for the rundown!

yer welcome, and I should've added that all the "other" 10@10s do a PM replay, same as KFOG. None do a marathon, tho' ;)

Interesting.... I wonder if any of the others' fanbases are as rabid as KFOG's.

The Peak asks people to vote for BOS on their FB page -- they get between 6 and 12 comments daily (one of which is usually mine). So... not even close to Foghead Nation.

Rob in his element again. Ramones are on "Needles and Pin-zuh"; Van the Man's on our wavelength; Neil Young looks out for his love; the Stones can't give it away on 7th Avenoo.

BOS the 'oo, "Guitar & Pen" -- can't remember the last time I heard this one.

Debbie H hangs on the phone in da hawl, ringin' off da wawl. VHM.

ELO's "It's Over" is another nice rarity. VHM.

BOS Wild in the Streets!! ya say ya wanna revolution?  it's the "Shape of Things to Come", baby! uber-BOS Max Frost & the Troopers! Incredible that it was written by Brill Building stalwarts Barry Mann & Cynthia Weill.

additional BOSes: Janis/Big Brother, "Combination of the 2"; Procol Harum, "Shine on Brightly", Mary Hopkin, "TWTD" and (OMFG) "Beck's Bolero"!  This one's worth catching on the replay, kids.

and Rob closes with the Doors, "Unknown Soldier".

sheesh: even Rob gets into the Rush act -- it's a fungus, I tells ya! "Time Stands Still", a rarity at least, which is more than can be said for "Got My Mind Set on You", "Showdown at Big Sky", "Rain in the Summertime" and "Hourglass".  ::)

BOS Broooce in the, er, tunnel. Heh.

uber-BOS2 Bourgeois-Tagg, "I Don't Mind at All". Nice production by Todd.

Aimee Mann sings on that track.  I suppose Geddy wanted a voice to take the lower, alto parts.  :D
