Flying Burrito Bros - BOS!  Belly does an amazing cover of this, BTW.

Oh. My. Effing. God. Now here's a bustout worthy of the name. Uber-BOS.

If you wonder from where the Jayhawks found a lot of their influence, this is it, right here.

caught a bit of the Jayhawks at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass last week.  They sounded pretty good.   I should have stayed listening to them, but instead went over to the big Banjo stage to hear EmmyLou Harris, where I get fairly bored distracted quickly.

We haven't heard the Stooges yet, have we?

ETA: Nor will we. At least not today.

BOS Communication Breakdown. 1969 was their debut year.

Sticking with the 10 way tie for BOS.  Great stuff all around.  Best guitar solos, Jimmy.

was glad to hear KFOG finally playing the new Jayhawks outside the "New Releases" Ghetto. A lovely tune.

I'm hoping to make a run to Music Millennium tomorrow (the local indie old school record store in PDX) and that's at the top of my list.
Let's get right to it.

They were never on my radar, but seeing them at HSB revealed to me that they have some really good harmonies and hooks.   I enjoyed it.

I went all three days and, as usual, came away feeling pretty lucky to be able to attend.

They were one of the mainstays of the No Depression/Alt Country movement when it first took hold in the mid-90s, but they declined (and even broke up for a time) after Mark Olsen left the band in late '95.  He's back now, so I have high hopes for their new record.  I'd recommend checking out either Tomorrow the Green Grass or Hollywood Town Hall if you're interested in checking them out further.

10/11/11 - Tuesday! Sweet Sounds of 1969

(Catty fans of Paul put down his new wife, Linda)
 1. Beatles - I Want You (She's So Heavy) (B.O.S-Tie!)
(Movie: Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice)
 2. Cream - Badge
 3. The Isley Brothers - It's Your Thing
(Movie: The Love God with Don Knotts)
 4. Smith - Baby It's You
 5. Tommy James & The Shondells - Crimson And Clover
 6. Neil Diamond - Sweet Caroline
(News: Speech: Teddy Kennedy)
 7. Sly & The Family Stone - Everyday People
 8. Flying Burrito Brothers - Hot Burrito #1 (B.O.S-Tie!)
(Movie: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid-JUMP!)
 9. Toots & The Maytals - Pressure Drop
(News: Speech: Richard Nixon)
10. Led Zeppelin - Communication Breakdown

Thinking about it, I seem to recall her playing Hot Burrito #1 once before, so it may not be the bustout I thought it was. But no less great.
Let's get right to it.

Just thought I'd tack this on.  Perhaps in the TANC category, or the YouTube category, who knows?  So, by coincidence I was able to hear part of the '69 set between classes, and happened to hear the Butch Cassidy jump scene.  Today...we had a weird testing day, so for the few students who showed up I showed a Due South episode (I always have Season 3 DVD set around!)  I played the "Mountie on the Bounty" episode, part 1.  I've seen this many times before, but today, I noticed something.  If you have 50 seconds, watch the beginning of this clip:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZ-g0zugZgo

All this time I never put 2+2 together.   Paul Haggis is one of the original writers, so it's not surprising that they'd recycle some famous script!  The line at the 0:45 point is: "Does this conversation seem strangely familiar to you?"  So here, a dozen years later, I finally got the joke!

Just for the record, the original 1969 scene:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ck6vqsOt-Pc
