so many things wrong w Barenaked Ladies doing some dubby reggae thing, like this.   Not a BNL fan in any case.

yikes!  I cannot get the image of Peter Finch doing a white man's overbite dance on this one.

I can't tell which band is whiter...BNL or They Might Be Giants.  In any case, ugh.

BNLs are whiter by virtue of also being Canadian. Even Robin Shabotsky thinks they're lame!

TMBG embraces their dorkiness with gusto, which makes them waay cooler.  They're also from Brooklyn.

Despite Peter Finch's love of the band, I have to admit that I'm a fan. But more so of their concerts than their albums, which tend to be way over-produced. (Actually their shows are tightly produced as well, but they're quick on their feet with the improv and banter, so it always feels fresh.)

BNL has gone through stages of trying to be "cool", but early on they definitely embraced their dorkiness:

What bums me out is after his arrest for cocaine posession, Steve Page left the band. He was always the deep/moody/intellectual one that gave the band some gravitas, and his voice, OMG his voice.

BNL continues to tour as a foursome, but without Steve's sarcastic (and operatic) counterpoint, I just don't think it'd be as great. I've not bought their new album nor gone to any of their concerts. If I win the Mountain Winery tickets I might go...

Sorry, didn't mean to devolve into a BNL memorial.

BOS to the completely unexpected Darkness (though I do recall this being on KFOG's playlist back in the day.)
BOS2 to Stacy's Mom.
I guess they had to play Los Lonely Boys.  Not usually a fan of that song but it did sound good on 10@10.
I love Unwell but Matchbox Twenty should not be on Ten at Ten, especially not Unwell.  Disease might have been a better pick.
The BNL song was huge on AAA for a couple of months...then dropped off the face of the earth.
Could have done without the Jayhawks and screamy Jet and the Dixie Chicks (concerning the latter, I wasn't terribly punk'd at radio's reaction to them, although that might be primarily because I don't like their music too much to begin with except for "Goodbye Earl."  Of course they're allowed to say whatever they want, but radio is also allowed to play whatever it wants.)

yes but just barely. I remember Live 105 playing the hell out of it, and KFOG sorta tried to ease it in by talking about it in the Morning Show (Irish Greg was a big fan) but the then-older-skewing Fogheads didn't care for it.

I think just a few clips.

one had the holy trinity (Chris Guest, Michael McKean & Harry Shearer) talking about the band's early days, when their low-end record company produced vinyl LP discs without holes in the middle.  The buyer had to punch their own hole ("But they were still good records, they were good product.")

then Fred Willard was talking about his shtick as a performer.

As do I… and it only seems like it was a couple of years ago. Happened around 6:30 if memory serves (I was waiting in my car for a carpool, so it had to be before 7).

I must've caught a rehash of the debate - we're seldom up (or conscious) that early. ;-}

Other good albums from 2003:

Johnette Napolitano: Sketchbook
Kraftwerk: Tour de France
New Pornographers: Electric Version

But yes, not a great year. I also don't like the smashing of the 10 year barrier. Anything after 2001 is too new to play on 10@10. There should be an additional rule that if it played on Alice, it's not welcome.

Well, that's a funny/snarky line but I actually disagree:  Blondie's "Maria" (for one example) is on my 1999 wish-list and it was a song that Alice played to death and KFOG ignored (despite having multiple Blondie oldies in constant rotation). I really wish the "new" KFOG would add it to the rotation.

Ok, then we can amend it to say something like if it's an older song that gets any play on Alice now, or in the past 3 years (2008 was the time Alice decided to turn itself into mediocrity, almost cold-turkey) then it's not welcome.  Alice was a very good Hot AC station before that.

Worth noting: AL commented on FB that she wanted to play Outkast and forgot to bring it in, so there's hope for the next '03 set.
