Yes, you have to deduct Katrina factors when judging music historically.  "Searchin'" is way more egregious than "Smooth!"

BTW Tink, I went to Alameda County Fair last four eve's, saw Charlie Daniels, Foghat, Tower of Power and last night Blue Oyster Cult.  Fun sets, TOP especially hot, as always.  I even got to chat a few minutes with all the guys from Foghat.  Did you know that two of them were in Savoy Brown (10at10 1969 staple "I'm Tired") prior to Foghat??

My hat is off to you, sir:  you are doing the county fair thing correctly!

I hope to get to Alameda's fair, it's probably my favorite for offering a contrast to cold & urban SF.

The heat, the model train pavilion, the farm animals -- love it.

dude... Foghat came directly out of The Savoy Brown Blues Band.  As I understand it (from wikipedia, etc)  Savoy Brown leader Kim Simmonds and his brother manager were less that equal with the salary structure to the band members, so the rhythm guitarist (Lonesome Dave Peverett, who also sang), the bass player and drummer all skedaddled for greener pastures.  They added a lead guitarist and boogie blues RAWKers Foghat was born.  They replaced the bass player in the 70s, and then the two guitarists died in the 2000s.  However, the drummer and the bass player filled out the ranks with replacements of sorts (the two new guitarists each have decent rock pedigrees and the one that sings is a good frontman, he used to sing in Ted Nugent's band) and they have been soldiering on since for better or worse.
I saw them on Saturday night in Petaluma, double bill: Foghat and BÖC. It was fun. The big three Foghat hits (Fool for the City, Slow Ride and I Just Wanna Make Love To You) are all on my playlist.
How was Blue Oyster Cult? did they play Last Days Of May, the story of a drug deal gone bad?

Dang cow-orkers.  Anyway, you've done your homework, Tink.  In talking with the band on Friday, the current Foghat lead singer/guitarist said he was with Ted Nugent late 70s to mid-80s, then Humble Pie for ten years; their other current guitarist, Bryan Bassett, was with Wild Cherry in 70s, he was the one who played the famous lick in "Play That Funky Music" while their lead singer Rob did the guitar solo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qe1ScoePqVA.   BOC was good, but felt they were phoning-it-in, while Foghat seemed to play with a more free-spirited style.  BOC did Burnin' For You, Godzilla, Shooting Shark, Shadow of California, Make Rock Not War, a couple others, and of course (more cowbell) Don't Fear The Reaper.

I think I would go with Souvenir and Joan Jett.

Hold on SMOOTHLY was all over my radio back in '81.  never really liked it, although .38 Special's Fantasy Girl ain't bad.
