I've been hooked into watching an episode of TNG every night at 10 on WGN.  They're in season 4, and last night they were riffing off of 2001, saying the line "I'm afraid I can't do that" (ala HAL) when Barkley is asked to disconnect himself from the main computer.  Tonight's episode, "Qpid" finds the crew dressed up like Robin Hood and his merry men, and Geordi (Alan a Dale) is plucking away miserably on a lute, when Worf (Will Scarlett) walks up to Geordi and smashes the lute, straight out of Animal House!

Perhaps I'm just writing for myself here, but I continue to watch TNG, and tonight's WGN episode was called The Drumhead, written somewhat about the Joe McCarthy era.  I guess that was Edward R Murrow's thing, not sure what Cronkite was doing during the witch hunts.  But history has a way of continually folding back on itself, and now these words, which didn't take a lot of thought to parse, sound current again:

Picard: "We think we've come so far. Torture of heretics, burning of witches, it's all ancient history. And then, before you can blink an eye, suddenly it threatens to start all over again."
Worf: "I believed her... I helped her... I did not see what she was."
Picard: "Mr. Worf, villains who twirl their mustaches are easy to spot. Those who clothe themselves in good deeds are well-camouflaged."
Worf: "I think, after yesterday, people will not be so ready to trust her."
Picard: "Maybe. But she or someone like her will always be with us, waiting for the right climate in which to flourish. Spreading fear in the name of righteousness. Vigilance, Mr. Worf. That is the price we have to continually pay."

The Prop 8 Thread?

At the end of tonight's episode of "The Host," the new Trill host, who Beverly Crusher had a love affair with, turns out to be female.  Beverly can't deal with these changes, but says at the very end something like:  "Maybe someday our ability to love won't be so limited"

Yesterday in Union Square there was a guy in a Boba Fett helmet playing the themes from Star Wars, Back to the Future, Close Encounters, Pink Panther and others on an accordion.

for those unaware, AMC is doing a remake of The Prisoner -- it'll be on in Nov.  It has Jim "Jesus" Caveizel in the McGoohan role, and Sir Ian McKellen as #2. (bet that made for interesting conversations on the set!)

Interesting...this episode ("City") seems to provide a lot of inspiration for the TNG episodes where they go back to early 1900's San Francisco.  It's also a prequel for the whole Stargate riff.

This really is instructive!  I'm not a scholar of the original series, and didn't know where Khan came from!

The upcoming Tribbles episode is a bit too cute for my taste.
