Title: The Star Trek (and other Sci-Fi) thread
Post by: ggould on May 13, 2005, 10:10:10 PM
I know at least Beej and I like to talk about Star Trek, and I couldn't find an explicit Trek thread, so here goes.

Watched most of the last episodes tonight, and don't know what to think.  The whole franchise is kind of in a coma, and I hope someday they'll get it together again.  Supposedly, Jolene Blalock has trashed the last episode, but I haven't found the link yet.

(sigh) That? Was awful. Really. The Enterprise cast becomes second bananas in their own finale. That's why Jolene trashed it. And I can't says I blame her.

And it's not like I actually liked the show- but daaaamn- that was cruel.

Missed it.  I stopped watching altogether a couple of months back.  I gave it every opportunity, but it just never caught my imagination.  Anyway, I'd have liked to see the final ep, just for the historical aspect...

I have it on tape- albeit a few minutes from the beginning are shaved a bit (I didn't realize the final ep was to be last Friday. So, I set my timer to get what I thought would be the next-to-last ep. Good thing I happened to turn on my TV to see them continue on with the finale.

Well, not "good thing". But, as you say Rod- "historical perspective" and all. I'll bring said tape to the gathering on Saturday!

what I missed, both Wed and Sun, was the first few minutes of the penultimate episode.

Yeah, they were definitely relegated to second banana.  I never really liked  Scott Bakula, but we was cruder, as I guess he historically should have been than Kirk.  Picard was pretty untoppable as a Captain, in that Shakespearean sort of way!

BWAH! There he is with that damn flute-thingy he "learned" to play!

Picard's pretty cool, I gotta say. Sisko was pretty cool, too. And even though I hated the show Voyager- I have a special place in my heart for Janeway.

By the by, Patrick Stewart can be heard doing the voice of Stan Smith's CIA boss on the new Fox animated show, American Dad.

When I watched the tLToC with a small group, the first thing I thought of was this 'flute' episode.  Do you remember the name of the episode?  It's probably not too hard to find, in this nerdy world of the net.

The episode where Picard plays with his flute is called "Inner Light"

Ah, Google- where would I be with out ye?

I must confess- I know more Original Series trivia than I know TNG stuff. But, I like TNG, too. It's kinda good that I'm not as familiar because when I'm flipping channels and a TNG rerun appears- there's a good chance I haven't seen it or don't remember it. Whereas with the Original Series I can recite em line for line it feels like.

OK, it's too late for me to be awake, but was installing some updates on laptop, and found TNG on Spike TV.  I thought there was no more Trek reruns.  Are there more?  I don't particularly like this episode, but it's somewhat comforting to watch.

When Spike TV premiered- one of their big selling ponts is that they were going to show TNG reruns. I think the TNN Channel (a channel for country western/NASCAR-lovin' men) shows them, too.

Anyway, I do believe Spke TV and TNN are the only places you can see TNG at this point in time.

Spike and TNN are one and the same -- TNN became Spike TV last year. "TNN" stood for The Nashville Network; then they tried to shed their country image by calling themselves The National Network. Then (after settling Spike Lee's silly lawsuit against them) they officially became Spike TV, the manly channel.

I saw it for the second time last night, this time with the whole fam-damily.  My 9-yr-old loved it, the 7 yr-old-thought it was okay, but a little scary at times.  My wife didn't get a lot of the standard sci-fi plot devices, and was non-plussed.

Title: TNG prescience
Post by: ggould on May 18, 2009, 10:24:19 PM
As we're all waiting for everyone to see the movie before discussing, I am watching my usual Monday night overload of TNG episodes on the SciFi channel.  The episode is called "The Hunted (http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/series/TNG/episode/68424.html)."  It is a typical socially conscious plot based on how soldiers become hard to reintegrate into society.  While being typically preachy, it did seem particularly timely, using phrases about how what happened to the soldiers was 'the will of the people' and so on.  It seemed as if it were some current plot, based on the current war.  I mean, this wasn't all that subtle, but coming from 1990, I imagine it was based on Vietnam experiences?

I've been hooked into watching an episode of TNG every night at 10 on WGN.  They're in season 4, and last night they were riffing off of 2001, saying the line "I'm afraid I can't do that" (ala HAL) when Barkley is asked to disconnect himself from the main computer.  Tonight's episode, "Qpid" finds the crew dressed up like Robin Hood and his merry men, and Geordi (Alan a Dale) is plucking away miserably on a lute, when Worf (Will Scarlett) walks up to Geordi and smashes the lute, straight out of Animal House!

"Sorry."
- Worf, after smashing La Forge's lute

Perhaps I'm just writing for myself here, but I continue to watch TNG, and tonight's WGN episode was called The Drumhead, written somewhat about the Joe McCarthy era.  I guess that was Edward R Murrow's thing, not sure what Cronkite was doing during the witch hunts.  But history has a way of continually folding back on itself, and now these words, which didn't take a lot of thought to parse, sound current again:

Quote
Picard: "We think we've come so far. Torture of heretics, burning of witches, it's all ancient history. And then, before you can blink an eye, suddenly it threatens to start all over again."
Worf: "I believed her... I helped her... I did not see what she was."
Picard: "Mr. Worf, villains who twirl their mustaches are easy to spot. Those who clothe themselves in good deeds are well-camouflaged."
Worf: "I think, after yesterday, people will not be so ready to trust her."
Picard: "Maybe. But she or someone like her will always be with us, waiting for the right climate in which to flourish. Spreading fear in the name of righteousness. Vigilance, Mr. Worf. That is the price we have to continually pay."
- Picard and Worf, discussing both the investigations and the misguidedness of Admiral Satie

The Prop 8 Thread?

At the end of tonight's episode of "The Host," the new Trill host, who Beverly Crusher had a love affair with, turns out to be female.  Beverly can't deal with these changes, but says at the very end something like:  "Maybe someday our ability to love won't be so limited"

for those unaware, AMC is doing a remake of The Prisoner -- it'll be on in Nov.  It has Jim "Jesus" Caveizel in the McGoohan role, and Sir Ian McKellen as #2. (bet that made for interesting conversations on the set!)

8pm: "Space Seed", Ricardo Montalban's first appearance as Khan.

10pm: "The Trouble With Tribbles".

Interesting...this episode ("City") seems to provide a lot of inspiration for the TNG episodes where they go back to early 1900's San Francisco.  It's also a prequel for the whole Stargate riff.

Is this an open-ended run? I've looked through both the exhibition and the Tech Museum's sites and don't see a closing date. I may be down there the first week of January, and would love to take Sarah to this for her b-day. (Yes, I have a wife who's a sci-fi geek.)

Wm Shatner reads beat-style from Sarah Palin's book, then Palin turns table on Shatner:
http://www.hulu.com/watch/114848/the-tonight-show-with-conan-obrien-shatner-gets-served-by-palin

the best part was trying to imagine the look on Carson's face that Shatner wrote about (and Palin read) in his autobiography, from when he performed his so-squirmingly-bad-it's-classic rendition of "Mr. Tambourine Man" on the Tonight Show.

ETA: tried unsuccessfully to find that on YouTube, but it wasn't a definitive search...there's a bunch of clips of Tambourine Man by Shatner on YouTube, but after 3 1/2 viewings that turned out not to be from Carson, I had to stop.

so I'm thinking of going to the Trek exhibit at the Tech Museum in SJ this weekend (it's been extended thru April 11th). Love this disclaimer on their website:

We encourage costumes but for the safety of you and our other guests and employees please abide by the following guidelines:

1. No masks.
2. Elaborate costuming may inhibit your ability to ride simulators.
3. No weapons. Phasers, shields or any other accessory that may be perceived as a safety concern in any galaxy by any species is prohibited and must be left in your space shuttles.

The Star Trek thing was really great; it's there for 2 more weeks and I *highly* recommend it if you are/were a fan. Lots of original costumes/props, including the bridge of the Enterprise (sit in Kirk's chair!) and the transporter room (see yourself beamed down and back up again!). All the different shows and movies represented. The Tech is a great museum all around -- it had been about 10 years since I was last there.

Huh.  Wife's uncle went with his family (wife and 8-year old son) and was wildly underwhelmed.  I think it was a combination of the cost ($25 or something right?) and lack of anything to *DO*.  He's more of a hands-on kind of guy, and of course it's not so much fun to look at phasers behind glass as it is to play with them or build them yourselves.

Also, don't they have a ridiculous "no photography" policy?  That killed it for me.  I mean, ok fine, we can't play with any of the props, but WTH, $25 and we can't take pictures of them?

They have staff photogs going around taking your picture -- which you can then buy at an outrageous fee at the end of your tour. Which, admittedly, sucks.  OTOH, the $25 ticket allows you to spend the day at the Tech, where there *is* a lot of hands-on stuff to play with.

Then change channels, my friend, to BBC America, where at 8pm every weeknight, you can see an episode of TNG.  They've been showing it for a month or so now. No, I'm not sure exactly how a Star Trek franchise landed on a channel that's purported to be wholly British (maybe Patrick Stewart had something to do with it?) but I'll take it.

(Aside: And just be glad you're not in Chicago. It'd be a 3am broadcast there. Who the hell can watch that but off-duty bartenders and cab drivers?)

Centric just did the same thing with Soul Train -- had been showing it at 9pm Pacific (as well as 3 other times during the day) and now it's been relegated to middle-of-the-nite.

Star Trek TNG has been on KOFY-TV20 (Cable-13) M-F at 11PM.  They'd show the same episode that would run on WGN the prior hour.

In TOS (The original Series) it seemed like whenever an away team went on a mission, the crew member in the red shirt would get killed!

Saw that -- HBO has the family film where they build a better dolphin ("Dolphin Tale", aka the six million dollar dolphin) starting at 8.  If I'm not liking it, I will switch to ST.  But I have the deluxe dvd set of TOS, so it's not important that I catch it on MeTV.

What's the deal with patch.com, BTW? does it make money? I noticed a while back that Brad Kava, the onetime radio and music critic for the SJ Merc, was reduced to being the SJ writer for southbay.patch (or whatever it's called).  This was AFTER he'd been dumped as one of the Examiner "experts" on radio. Watching the Star Trek episode "The Way to Eden" -- they beam a bunch of space hippies onto the Enterprise.  They look like Phish fans to me.

Classic Trek alert: tonite at 9 Me-TV is showing the Star Trek episode "Turnabout Intruder", the last episode of the series and the one in which Shatner-as-Kirk gets in touch with his feminine side by switching bodies with a woman. A space oddity indeed.

so, last week we got the very last Trek episode; tonite at 9 Me-TV cycles back and gives us the very first.

Saw Star Trek/Darkness and thought it was very very entertaining. I understand the criticism that it's no longer Gene Roddenberry's vision, but I think the worst you can say in that regard is that it's trying to have it both ways.  I can't get into the plot for fear of spoilers, but there's a nice speech at the end ol' Gene would've liked, I think.  And the casting (as it was last time) is dead-on. There are moments when Chris Pine is so... Shatner that it's scary. And Zachary Quinto is really kind of amazing. And yes, Mr Cumberbatch is a great villain.

I haven't seen the movie yet.  Here's a comment I saw in another forum.  Perhaps you'd care to
comment on it (without spoiling anything, of course.)

Quote
I saw the 2009 movie on Netflix.  It was better than this one.  Its
being pretty good is why I was willing to go to a theater to see the
new one.  (I saw Star Wars eps. 1 - 3 through a sense of generational
imperative.  They pretty much worked that out of my system.)  The
objection to the new one is that it is essentially a summer
blockbuster blow-em-up, with a bunch of winking at the Trekkies in the
audience.  As I say, it isn't exactly bad.  It is a more-than-
competent summer blockbuster blow-em-up.  Star Trek has always been
happy to blow stuff up, but that isn't really the point of Star Trek.

The best observation I have read is that in a better world, Joss
Whedon would have been given the Star Trek franchise and J.J. Abrams
the Avengers.

On the other hand, the audience seemed to like it.

Does it have anything to do with the possible fact that this is really a summer "blockbuster" action
movie that merely wears the trappings of Star Trek, as opposed to a movie that is Star Trek
through to its soul and happens to have good action and dazzling f/x as well?

I finally made it last night... it was, uh, okay.  I got caught up in the action of the second half, and quite enjoyed Spock at the end (I have no problem with Spock shedding a tear or getting lost in a rage of vengeance -- he is half human and still learning to control his emotions at this stage of his life).

The problems are many.  The opening sequence is idiotic, an unbelievable action set piece, the only purpose of which was to serve as an entry point into the plot.  There was never a sense of danger there, because it's obvious that none of the characters in the scene are going to die in the first 5 minutes of the movie.  There were a lot of things going on that just served the needs of the moment, the action or the plot.

BTW, Geoff -- I was fine with the Tribble.  They referenced a couple of episodes, mentioning the "Mudd incident" at one point, so perhaps there was a Tribble incident along the way as well.  It was, after all, a dead tribble.

He's no fun -- he fell right over!

I've been getting some amusement over reading the various reviews of ST:ID.
Here's the end of the usually entertaining and occasionally enigmatic Richard
Von Busack's review in the San Jose Metro:

Quote

The bigger emotional climax is, sadly, mush.  To make it plain:  I want to be
the weakling who snivels when Spock looks manfully at Kirk, barely concealing
his emotions.  I don't want to watch them snivel at each other.

Quinto is an odd duck -- a pale Poindexter, an overexplainer so pedantic you
feel for him.  I loved the way Spock dropped his jaw a little when Kirk declares
his friendship, as if what the captain had said was shockingly indecent.  When
Quinto's Spock and Pine's Kirk look at each other, it's clear there could be no
other serious affection in each other's lives; the prophecies in the slash
fiction are fulfilled.

These reboots are a fight between market forces, between what a friend
dismissively calls "gamer crap" and the sturdy roots of the Trek mythos, whose
lifeblood (and sap) come from 20th-century moveimaking.

The tensions resemble the same quarrel between military ardor and technical
expertise played out in every giant-insect movie ever made; eventually, the
white coats and the top brass patch up the differences between them over the
bodies of the dead alien invaders.  Maybe I'm being too hard on the Captain.
Kirk is still essentially out of control when the movies ends, but maybe, just
maybe, he's beginning to see the light of logic.  No, probably just another lens
flare.

Of the high-profile sci-fi movies this summer that I'm aware of, three down and
one to go.  Oblivion, Star Trek Into Darkness, and After Earth all getting mixed
reviews, with ST:ID clearly the better of a sorry lot, and the other two fighting
a hard battle for last place.  That leaves Elysium starring Jodie Foster and Matt
Damon.  Any others to watch for?

Personally I'm looking forward to Man of Steel; if nothing else Michael Shannon as General Zod is worth the price for me. I was interested in Pacific Rim until I saw the trailer; it's clearly a Transformers knock-off. Ditto R.I.P.D., a Men in Black clone.  I'm with ya on Elysium because I loved District 9.

Oh and World War Z has gotten bad early buzz.

The trailer for World War Z looked a mess.  Elysium's trailer looked good.

Not all that interested in yet another Superman flick.

There was also a trailer for "Ender's Game", but I think it said it was coming out Nov. 1.  The trailer looked fine, but I think they're going to ruin it anyway.  And, since it's based on a game already (prophetically, by Orson Scott Card), the "gamer crap" will be off the charts.

One thing I'd like to add that was not mentioned in the article, and seems somewhat obvious to me, is the comparison between this story and "The Last Temptation of Christ."
