Our reliably contrarian friend Mick LaSalle weighs in:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/mlasalle/detail?blogid=38&entry_id=42639

Oddly, I find myself agreeing with him, up to a point (especially about MJ's "King of Pop" monicker, which I always found ridiculous). More later when I get my thoughts together.

I also agree about the KoP nickname, though didn't know MJ invented it himself.  Wouldn't surprise me: he floated some weird stories about himself just to sty in the headlines, like the rumor he purchased  the Elephant Man bones.

I do disagree about skipping "Human Nature" when it comes into rotation (actually, I don't listen to entire albums these days in the prescribed order).  I never skip that one.  In fact, I seek it out.  love it.

eta: this person's comment is fantastic...

Agreed on "bittermelon"s comment -- the Mick-is-an-idiot crowd are loud and proud whenever he pontificates about music, thank gawd -- tho' the operative phrase in that paragraph is "for a short time".

I'm pretty Michael'd-out at this point.  Last nite, JJ on KPOO was all-MJ. The first 2 hours concentrated on the '70s; got to hear lots of J-5 stuff including some deep LP cuts -- covers of things like Smokey's "Darling Dear", Sly's "Stand" (a NTM surprise), and even "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" (which is hilarious is you know what movie it's from). The early J-5 output includes some of the best pop singles ever made, and even their lesser 45s are superbly produced -- personal faves like "Looking Thru the Windows", "Corner of the Sky" and the forgotten "Hallelujah Day" (a celebration of the end of US involvement in Vietnam!) have a place in my heart despite their mediocre chart performance.

While I was listening to JJ, I had VH-1 on mute. They were doing nonstop Michael too, but of course they were limited to available vidclips, which meant that, aside from "ABC" on American Bandstand, it was mostly "Billie Jean"-to-now.  And here's the thing: the videos from the Bad LP onward are godawful -- some of the worst, most wildly overconceived, ridiculous "mini-movie" monstrosities ever committed to celluloid. Truly everything wrong with the '80s MTV culture was encapsulated in these vids -- there are good songs on Bad, but MJ would not have had five #1 singles from it if not for the MTV machine. It was mind-numbing to see these things pass one-after-the-other, with the unspoken implication that they were all wonderful because, well, they had MJ in them. Which in a way is what LaSalle was getting at: You can make the most brilliant LP ever, and that assures you your place in history; but that doesn't mean we have to pretend that *everything* you've done since is genius.

The KPOO deejay who was on before JJ was also doing an MJ trib; he somehow had gotten hold of a couple of advance tracks from the MJ LP coming later this year. They were drippy, generic ballads, which pretty much defines most of his '90s and '00s output, sadly.

In closing: FOX just opened tonite's Simpsons ep with the old "Do the Bartman" clip (first time it's been seen in years), which ends with Bart saying "eat your heart out, Michael!"  Then they showed a slide that said "In memory of Michael Jackson".

Agreed with everything you wrote but especially with this excerpt.  I've only recently gotten to know this period of J5 work, and I like it a lot, especially the joy of "Hallelujah Day."  Useless trivia: as evidenced by our new commemorative that allegedly is on stands already, Lenny Kravitz was/is quite partial to "Lookin' Through the Windows."

Worth noting that the MTV and megahit culture that gave us Bad also gave us other 5+ hit albums, from Rhythm Nation to Whitney Houston's first two albums.

Oh, and "Human Nature" is almost surely in my MJ Top 5.  I'll compile a Top 10 at some point.  Now I need SLEEP.......

I mentioned to an acquaintance yesterday about Macca getting the rights back for the Beatles catalog, and he said that during the suspicious 2 hr gap in the timeline "you know that's when that deal went down."

Conspiracy theory anyone?

I think Macca should get the kids, too. Better they should be raised as vegans than Jehovah's Witnesses!

On Thursday, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson were each on TV within a half-hour of each other; both were passing themselves off as "friend and spritual advisor to the Jackson family". And it occurred to be that if MJ hadn't grown up in a typical African-American family, having Jeebus shoved down his throat, he might've had a better chance of not being so fucked-up and self-hating where sexuality is concerned.

I go away on vacation for a week and ...

RIP Farrah, Ed and Michael.  We only knew about Mike, as it was the only one big enough to make it onto ESPN.  With 5 guys on a fishing trip, sports is about the only thing we can all agree to watch.  Hell, we even watched soccer.

KPOO deejay tonight doing a little MJ tribute in the middle of his oldies (doo-wop-ish) set.  First he played "Who's Lovin' You", the B-Side of "I Want You Back," which he then played.

Check out the J5 on Ed Sullivan doing Who's Lovin' You" -- wow!

oh yeah, heard some of that. They went under the name "Ripple and The Waves with Michael" I think it was.  a few cuts from the Steeltown label.  Some of that, (I recall one called "Jam") is apperently hard to find in release.  The deejay suggested we cuye up the recorder and tape the cuts.  (Tape recrorder? I have heard of such things in books...) The fidelity was fairly low on some of it, sounding like they put a mic up in the room as the boys played.  but it was really fun.

I wonder how long this MJ fascination phase will go on for me..  I can't get enough of his music right now, esp the KPOO approach to his old suff (they're playing Sugar Daddy right now.) Not that I ever considered myself a huge MJ fan, but I'm still processing the whole thing an dlove hearing his music. I think I'll be very interested in the subsequent findings of his life, any tell-all books that might surface -- although I'm sure anyone close to MJ was well paid to "shut the hell up for ever".  I don't think you can legally libel a dead person, but I wonder if anyone in his remaining estate, like the kids guardians (which might be grandma Katherine judging form the moves the Jackson family is taking to take control of MJ's estate), could sue to protect the reputation of a "business" like MJ, should anything untoward surface.

Neal Conan, who hosts Talk of the Nation on NPR, did a show on MJ yesterday, too.  I don't have cable and despise TV news, so pretty much all my coverage of this is coming from prints sources (and their online arms) and the bits I heard from radio.

eta:

The fabulous "Who's Lovin' You" on KPOO --the track that prompted Berry Gordy to say "he may be only 11, but he's got an old soul".

Quincy Jones apparently told Bryan Monroe, journalist and former editorial director of Ebony and Jet magazines, that  "there were only two people that stood out to him, and he met them both at eight years old. One was Stevie Wonder, the other was Michael Jackson."   heard it on the NPR Talk of the nation show yesterday:

I've been hearing several sources speculating that MJ may have died without a valid will in force. If that's the case that really shocks me, because while people die intestate all the time, for someone with an estate of the size and complexity of MJ's to do so would be a *huge* dereliction of duty by his legal advisors. There is no excuse for someone of his wealth not to have some sort of valid will.
Let's get right to it.

when they said he died "intestate" I though they meant he had no testicles. :)

TMZ is now reporting what I mentioned last week about him not being the biological father of the 2 oldest kids; they also say that Debbie was a surrogate so she's not their actual mother either!

that is amazing, yet I can believe it.  Al this talk about him being a great businessman seems to hinge on his successful acquisition of ATV Music, but it's apparent from other reports that he spent cash like crazy, not only for things like the  upkeep Neverland (I heard over $15 million per year, that's not counting mortgage) and  -- probably, I'm guessing -- to pay off those pesky out of court settlements and attendant hush money.   I heard once he reserved the top two floors of the Plaza in NYC, but his entourage was only five people at the time.  He had bad advisors and he was paranoid and damaged.  I bet he did make a will here and there, but my theory is when it was examined by his "people," they conspired to convince him to negate it b/c they weren't getting enough.  Just my paranoid take.

Rumor I've heard is that he has *multiple* wills.  I think in such a case the last one signed trumps the others.

Yep, but you can bet some of the heirs who are named in previous versions but aren't so well remembered in the final one are going to try to invalidate it.
