For you young'uns: a "gen-X oldies" format on a station on Lawn Guyland:

http://www.my94x.com/Listen-Live/6089805

They basically play Top 40 hits from 1985-2005. I just tuned in and they went from "Hollaback Girl" to  Mariah Carey's "Someday".  This shit is bananas, all right. I'm told they play quite a bit of rock too. Will investigate more tomorrow.

you know who never gazes into their navels?

RUSH, that's who.  Always looking forward, my friends!  None of that schmaltzy nostalgia for THIS Canadian power trio, eh?!

a new album rumored for late May:

This should really be from 1984-1995.  And it's shoegazing, people!

gonna listen to them for the next hour -- we're starting off with DM's "Enjoy the Silence"

Damn -- the reverb they're using on the deejay makes '60s Top 40 sound like NPR.

Finger Eleven, "One Thing"
Lauryn Hill, "Doo Wop (That Thing)"
yay! we get RickRolled! "Never Gonna Give You up"
Salt'n'Pepa, "Whatta man" (HAAAAAAAY!)
Justin Timberlake, "What Goes Around..."
Alanis Meredith Brooks, "Bitch"
Nelly, "Country Grammar"
Black Crowes, "Hard to Handle"
AB Logic "The Hitman"
Bon Jovi, "Livin' on a Prayer"
Seal, "Crazy"

Well, that was kinda interesting. Wouldn't want it as a steady diet (and that Nelly --> Black Crowes segue is dicey) but if I were 35 I'd be all over it -- surprised this format isn't more widespread, market-wise.

The Peak did another of their "what do you like/dislike?" polls on FB. Best comment:

Quote
In general, I'd rather hear less of whomever just won a ton of Grammy Awards (i.e. Adele), a band I can hear on every other station, or see playing on The Today Show (i.e. Coldplay), or someone who is in heavy rotation on LITE FM (i.e. John Mayer). For the duration of those songs, you become like all the stations I try to ignore by choosing to listen to The Peak in the first place.

USC is buying KCNL 104.9 in order to make it a simulcast of KDFC.

Where is the transmitter?  How strong?

Well, now Cumulus doesn't have to pay for his Parkinsons-related medical bills, I guess.

Holy smokes: Live 105 has upped their Top four songs to 87-89 spins per week. ( :o::) )  A few weeks ago they were 70-74...before that, ~60.

Alice, Star, and Mix aren't much better, with highs in the upper 60s.

KREV's top songs are between 114-119.  Movin's are from 115 to 127.  ::)

In contrast...KFOG tops out at 38.  The top 6 have 26-38 spins per week.  Everything else, 16 or less.

As I noted on FB, in 2 hours of Live 105 Sunday afternoon, I heard "We Are Young" 3 times. Damn, I hate People-Meters.

The KREV figure actually seems low, considering I hear songs twice an hour --I'm guessing different mixes of the same song count as different songs? I also see they've added the Billy Bush syndicated crapfest in evenings. Heard a bit at the gym tonite -- yeesh. And they played a dance mix of "Pumped-Up Kicks" that was painful.

And I guess the KFOG number seems right -- 38 spins per week is roughly 5-1/2 times a day, when you factor in all the "specialty" shows on Sunday.

So those six would be... "Drive By", "Somebody That I Used To Know", "We Are Young"... and what other three?

Ralph's comments on SFGate -- the whole firing process took 7 minutes:
