Nice piece on Berkeley author Michael Chabon and his love of oldies radio in Ben Fong Torres' column today:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/01/22/PKTR1BIAR6.DTL

that was terrific. In related news, Mr Fong-Torres did his last show on that KYA Tribute Website this weekend.

i like what Greil Marcus says, too.   A song over the air sounds different than when you play it yourself, it comes to you like an unexpected gift.

Anyone know what was said on Alice's Sarah & Vinnie show that led to a suspension?  It came up as a "hot Google topic" here but I can't find any deets.

Don't renew your Sirius/XM agreement too quickly...

One more nail in the coffin of Sirius/XM:  Clear Channel is bidding to get Howard Stern back to terrestrial radio.

UPDATE (sorta): They supposedly said... something offensive last week. Management apologized this morning without alluding in any way to what it was or who was offended.

Speculation that either (a) it was something homophobic or (b) that it didn't happen and that it's a hoax for publicity purposes.

Sounds like it could be the latter. Following the chain of links, I found this update on the KPIX website:

Quote
UPDATE, 3:02 P.M.: Our fine staff on the assignment desk has been in touch with not one, but two, sources close to the story from within the Alice FM offices who say that the entire "suspension" announcement was a big joke. It's all a hoax. No one was suspended, and no gay slurs were uttered.
Let's get right to it.

For those who listen to A's games on the radio and are familiar with Marty Lurie's long-running pre-game show "Right off the Bat" -- he's moving it to KNBR this year and will now be part of the Giants radio team. Seems now that KTRB are running the Savage Weiner in the afternoons from 3-to-6, they wanted to cut the A's pre-game hoopla to a bare minimum so as not to pre-empt Savage.

I was looking at The Sound's website and saw that they carry Little Steven's show, and clicked the link -- they run him Sat nite/Sun morning at midnite. Poor Steven -- I immediately flashed on that Casey Kasem tape where he's reading promos for affiliates and discovers some station in Bumfuck, Iowa is running him at 2am.

Local conservative talk host Lee Rodgers got the boot right after his show last Thursday:

Surprised Garofoli is the one covering this, and not Ben Fong-Torres.

Check the comments section -- great stuff in re: uber-rightie Rodgers turning to his union for help, not to mention him bashing big evil corporation Citadel. It's bizarro world, I tells ya!

I remember when he took over for M. Dung.  Dave, Steve Silberman, and I shared a cabin at one of the early Gathering of the Vibes festivals in '97

Which one is Gans? I don't think I've ever seen a pic of him.
