For those who listen to MAX: They've hired former Live 105 guy Web Fingers to be their morning man. Duuude!

I admit it. I have MAX in my car button pushing queue. When nothing is on I want to hear, I try MAX and stay if it's OK and flip some more if not. Female DJ in the afternoon. Didn't hear who she was.

I have a MAX button now too (sorry BONE!).

The other day they went from Smashing Pumpkins into Boston, which made me wonder if they have a really savvy programmer or they just got lucky.  But over a decade ago, when Smashing Pumpkins first appeared on the cover of the Rolling Stone, the interviewer led off the article by making quite a big deal out of the fact that Billy Corgan listed Boston as a primary influence.

Back in the early 90s I was doing shows at Morty's Nightclub in North Beach. We'd do comedy and have a musical guest. Sometimes, we'd write a sketch with the musical guest in it.

We worked with a band Web Fingers was in. I can't remember the name of the band, though. He was a nice guy. I hope he still is.

The Good News: The KPIG simulcast on 1510 AM is supposed to start tomorrow.

The Bad News: the standards format they've been running for the past month is going away and I've become rather attached to it. As poc will attest (I subjected her to the station the other night), it's a rather groovy mix of classic old stuff (Frank, Ella, Nat "King" Cole) with a healthy dose of hits by Barry Manilow, Englebert Humperdinck (!) and the Carpenters, some of which I haven't heard on the radio in decades:

"Weekend in New England", "Tryin' to Get the Feeling" (Barry)
"Solitaire", "I Won't last a Day Without You" (Carpenters)
"Am I That Easy to Forget" (Englebert)

And speaking of standards, KABL also bites the dust on Tuesday. But unlike the hi-JACK-ing of Oldies in NY & Chicago, the KABL jocks will at least get to say goodbye.

Hey y'all, if you've ever listened to Live 105, you have to listen today.  They're doing a "No Boundaries" weekend, which essentially consists of one R'n'R classic & one 80's flashback or deep cut plus a couple of contemporary Live 105 tracks per set.  When I turned on the radio this morning I heard The Cult "Love Removal Machine" into The Youngbloods "Get Together" and have since heard such segues as Re-Re's "Respect" into Social Distortion's cover of "Ring Of Fire" and the Stones "19th Nervous Breakdown" into Becks' "Black Tambourine".

Just now the last 5 songs have been The Doors "Light My Fire" into The Clash "Guns Of Brixton"  (worth the whole day just to hear that on the radio again), into the latest from the White Stripes, "My Doorbell", into Sly ATFS "Dance To The Music" into The Cure "Fascination Street".

Hoo Hah.

Damn, now they just played Green Day "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", Johnny Cash "I Walk The Line", L7 "Pretend We're Dead" & CCR "Fortunate Son".

Damn! just saw this. But I'm listening now.

So this is their answer to Jack/MAX and the Star 101 "Whatever Weekends", I presume.  Better than all of those put together, and it'll be interesting what the reaction is from their core audience.

Stereo MCs "Connected" into... Wha?  "I'm Sorry Miss Jackson"? Outkast?

Well, they played a lot of phone call clips from people sayng they love it, and one from a guy who hated it. Interesting explanation from the PD: apparently they did a survey recently where they went to listeners homes to rummage thru their record collections. The LPs that showed up most frequently were the basis for this weekend.  I tuned out around 7 to watch Punk: Attitude a new docu on IFC about the history of punk that was excellent. (Gaz: Henry Rollins had some hilarious comments about homoeroticism in rock.)

Meanwhile The Bone started Little Steven's show TWENTY MINUTES EARLY (!?!) and luckily I only missed one song. Steven played the Beatles' "Run For Your Life" (Mr. Lennon as the original gangsta) and followed up by saying "A year from now I'll be the ONLY one playing the Beatles on the radio." As Homer would say, It's funny because it's true.

I don't mean to sound dense or like I don't belive you- but, like, why?

Not that I would mind all that much- Beatles is like air at this point (although I am sorry I missed hearing "Run For Your Life". I got into the Beatles when I was in junior high and even then that song told me there was more to John Lennon than giving peace a chance & stuff.

(Sunday is my TV night- so I often miss then beginnings of Little Steven's shows since they moved to an earlier time. At least I got to hear the Kaiser Chiefs last night.

I think that was Steven's little dig at the fact that Oldies stations are biting the dust left and right (and he's in NY where the whole Oldies-replaced-by-JACK thing was a big deal). Classic Rock stations play less & less Beatles and add Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

But that Kaiser Chiefs song RULES! It's interesting how few of Steven's "Coolest song" picks cross over to KFOG -- Jet managed it, and KFOG's playing that Oasis song (which I also love).  But where are the Raveonettes? We do get every Cold Patrol/Snowplay clone in creation(or "coldplay and all the nonsense" as Steven referred to them recently).

I have an mp3 of "I Predict a Riot" (& 2 more Kaiser Chief's tunes) as well as 3 Raveonette mp3s if you want me to zap them to you later, RGMike.

And thanks for the explanation! I wonder how KFRC will hold up...

I actually bought the new Raveonettes and scored a used copy of their previous one at Wherehouse last week and haven't had a chance to listen to either yet.

For the same reason you never hear Elvis's '50s output on American radio anymore.   The '60s are the new '50s, thank you JACK.
