This has been quite a listen so far.  BOS to Luther Ingram's "If Loving You Is Wrong," a debut at #19.  Numerous OMGWTFs: Wayne Newton's "Daddy Don't You Come So Fast," the Royal Scots Dragoon Guard's "Amazing Grace" (WOS; have I ever told you how much I hate the sound of bagpipes?; although a great story about how an overnight DJ turned it into a hit), and (new to me, amazingly) Cher's "Living in a House Divided."

"He'd grab her by the hair ... You can't do that today, fellas - it might come off."  This is actually the first time I've heard "Troglodyte" in its entirety.

This weekend (6/28-29) AT40-The 70's visits June 24, 1972. The playlist:
http://www.mynorthwest.com/?sid=22371&nid=119

can't wait for this one! Ree-Ree's "All the King's Horses" is a lost gem; the Wayne Newton is HFH cheeze personified. And ah lurves the Condoleeza Bros & Sister Rice, "Too Late To Turn Black Now" ;)

No argument on the Wayne Newton, but he's got serious cheeze competition, and it's topping the chart: Sammy Davis' Candy Man!?!? The mind boggles that it actually went #1. And dig the name of the artist at #12--possibly the longest artist name ever: The Pipes & Drums & The Military Band of The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards.

No doubt about it, '72 was a wacky year for pop.
Let's get right to it.

The '80s went back to 1986, where we have Boys Don't Cry at #13 with "I Wanna Be a Cowboy."  Mike, I know you don't care for this one, but c'mon, if it had been a Devo single people would be creaming over it.

WTF? Casey just called Nu Shooz (falling 5 to 12 with the sublime "I Can't Wait") "a nine-piece band" led by the husband-wife team.  I thought it was just the two - it took nine people to create that?

Heh, and now Casey talks up Madonna's imminent Shanghai Surprise.  At least she's in with one of her best efforts, "Live to Tell" at #11.

If it had been Devo, it would've actually been funny.

I've never hated "Candy Man"; it's the only decent song from the overrated Willy Wonka, and Sammy, pro that he was, gave it his all, getting a silk-purse-from-sow's-ear award from me. (The first time I heard it, I assumed it was an anti-drug metaphor!) Had it been released the previous summer (when the movie was in theaters), the song would've been guaranteed an Oscar nomination. But interesting trivia: Sammy and Wayne, both Vegas vets, were on the same label, MGM (Newton on their Chelsea subsid), hardly a world-beater in terms of chart domination -- their only consistent hitmakers were the Osmonds. And label chairman Mike Curb ended up Lieut. Governor of California.

This chart has indeed been a treat. Has Dave ever played Mouth & McNeil's delightful "How Do You Do?"  We had 3 teen idols (Donny, MJ and David Cassidy) back-to-back-to-back at #s 28-27-26. And the ROTFL of the week, is Casey's story about how Karen Carpenter used to beat the crap out of the bullies who threatened brother Richard -- and was a better softball player than him to boot. Well, er... DUH!

Didn't Casey tell this story (about how Neil Diamond realized he could never be a doctor) in another year recently?  And another bit o'trivia: Helen Reddy debuted on the Hot 100 with "I Am Woman" this week in 1972... and dropped out 3 weeks later.  She would re-chart it in Sept., and finally hit #1 in December.

Wayne Newton's "Daddy Don't You Come So Fast"

Bwahahaha! I just noticed that now.  More trivia: I seem to recall hearing that "DDYWSF" landed in Newton's lap after being turned down by a bunch of singers including Tom Jones.

Hope Gaz gets to hear this one. Caught the Top Ten this morning. Since this was from '79, that means it was originally a 4-hour show; the last hour didn't sound edited, so I'm not sure what they did to compress things (or if maybe KFRC just played the Top 30).

The '80s show was another "special" one: the 40 top new acts of the '80s.  Fairly entertaining, though to be honest, as '80s hits go, the OHWs are a lot more fun.

I love that one too.  Only one new to me this week is #26, Aerosmith's "Last Child."

More interesting to me is the big deal Casey made about having three debuts in the 20s, one of which marked only the second time since the Beatles' '64 domination that an artist had 3 songs in the Top 40 (the other, which we heard a few months ago, was Melanie in '71, curiously enough).  Today. between guest appearances and iTunes chart bounces, it's outright commonplace for that to happen.
