I saw Bon Iver at the Bill Graham Civic last night. Great show, except they didn't play Wanted Dead or Alive or Bad Medicine (or Highway to Hell, for that matter). Their first album was mostly a one-man affair, but there was a nine-man (literally) indie rock ensemble on stage, with a bunch of multi-instrumentalists, and they made an awesome racket. The kids (mostly twentysomethings) in the crowd were all right, very nice and polite. The encore was especially good; they played Ophelia in honor of Levon Holm. A bonus was that I got to go backstage with my brother-in-law, who is friends with the main guy, Justin Vernon. I was thinking it was my first ever backstage visit, except I then remembered I had gotten to go backstage at a Sheena Easton concert in 1989 with my friend who was reviewing the show for a local weekly. I didn't get to talk to Sheena, though, and did hang out with Justin, who is a very nice guy, for awhile. Also, for the first time in a long while, I bought the t-shirt (two actually), which I guess is the budget version of the middle-aged guy buying a Porsche.

wow, awesome! I love that they played "Ophelia" -- it appears to be yer typical  music geek's fave Band song.

That's funny. My brother-in-law was congratulating Justin on that choice in lieu of a bigger hit. Maybe they should have played The Shape I'm In. Justin thought The Weight was too obvious and indicated The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down was too complex to learn on short notice -- they had learned Ophelia the day of the performance.

That and "Don't Do It" seem to be the two songs I'm seeing ref'd most often in tribute posts, articles and whatnot.  Glad that Bon Iver paid some homage to Levon, too. Too bad he's not here to see the outpouring of love, but that's how it always seems to work.

And HTY, very cool that you got some hang time with the main Iver.

Let's get right to it.

Until they appeared on Colbert last year, I thought it was pronounced "Bonn EYE-vur" rather than "bone ee-VAIR"

Looks like a few good 'uns. That first one has some serious gospel potential. The last one should be a power pop paradise.  And what's the E Family?

ETA: Oh, that E Family. (I was thinking A Man Called E and friends. Wrong-o.)  That one would be a winner, too. Wonder if Alejandro will show up?

Hey all, I was able to snag tix for this Friday 8pm at Great American Music Hall SF, but my usual buddies are not available. If one of you is interested/curious in the hybrid sounds of country, soul, jazz from Lambchop (google 'em) and/or seeing Mike Nesmith, who's doing a rare appearance with them as he readies new music and a possible reunion tour with the country rock band he had in '70s after the Monkees, The First National Band, let me know today, I'll get back to you later tonight or Friday AM. Cost is $20.  FYI below is FB post from Nesmith about the gig -
Here is a quick glance at my calendar and agenda for the next few months – just so you can see. On May 4th I'll be in San Francisco to play a live date at the Great American Music Hall. I am playing a short set at the invitation of Kurt Wagner of Lambchop whose show it is, and I am really looking forward to it. It’s sold out, I’m only singing 4 or 5 songs, and I will scoot in and out of the venue quickly. And I am in the studio finishing up some tech stuff – building another computer – and writing and recording new music. I have put together a book proposal about MTV the Music Video and my mother’s invention of Liquid Paper. I am reconfiguring the Monkees special we did in ’98, and I connected with John Ware about reforming what is left of the First National Band for a short live tour doing the RCA material. That’s pretty much it at the moment. See you May 4th in SF if you're around there.
