Dan: (mutters something unintelligible yet profane)

Jorge: Was that Spanish?

Dan: No, that was the sound of frustration.

Jorge: Oh, then it was Basque?

I love this place.

That's great, is Jorge actually Spanish as opposed to Latin American?

I think he's Dominican -- just quick on the draw.

Thread revived for another bit of Voice humor: We were talking about revising our Style Guide (mostly derived from Chicago, with some exceptions), and I suggested calling it ...

wait for it ...

the Comma Sutra.

May I use that if the occasion ever arises?

yes, i'm salivating over it, too. I think that's how I will refer to Gaz from now on: J.M., creator of the Comma Sutra.

Interesting piece, too bad they couldn't have done this in time for Memorial Day.  Also seemed kind of odd that they included photos of Zito from 2002 and 2003 -- makes this all feel like a marketing campaign of some sort, "building the brand of Zito" in the community.  Something's going on, and I don't know what it is.

or maybe making him him look less like a left-coast flake, which will be helpful if he gets traded to someplace like Atlanta.

If that were the case then they'd show him lugging around dumbbells instead of a guitar.  But the glowering "patriotism is one of his interests!" tone in the opening lends credence to selling him to middle America.

Why a SF paper wants to sell middle America on Zito remains a fascinating question to me, though.

Two great lines from tonight's issue close:

1.

Dan: The cover's in!
(we look at the cover: an article on Mike Bloomberg as the "Colossus" of the mayoral race has Bloomie rendered as the Jolly Green Giant.)
Jorge: Why is he the Jolly Green Giant instead of a Colossus?
Phyllis: Does the Jolly Green Giant smoosh people?

2.

Dan, proofing an article: What?!  I dehyph'd 'multi-culti'!  I know I did!
Phyllis: Ward CQ'ed it.  He said it looked like an eggplant dish.

Well gang, it's happened: Village Voice Media and New Times have agreed to a merger.  You can read about it at villagevoice.com or at gawker.com.  Meetings today to discuss the implications -- of course, not being a proper employee, I wasn't invited to the "real" meeting, and must make do with a fill-me-in meeting with the copy editors afterwards.  This isn't going to go down well.

We feel your pain, bub  The NY Times is reporting the story too -- a friend just emailed it to me.
