18 April 2007--it's 1985
« on: April 18, 2007, 10:10:08 AM »
No earthquake set today. I tuned in late, missed the intro but heard The Firm. Followed by the Hooters, now we're hearing Sting's jazzy take on Shadows in the Rain.

Expect it will be quiet here today--Mike's between jobs, I'm busy getting ready to leave on vacay tomorrow, and no telling about the rest of the gang.
Let's get right to it.

I'm here, boss.  But it's hard to get excited about 85.  Except that that's the year I graduated from Stanford.  But that was smack in the middle of 80s suckage.

I'm here too, and ditto for me regarding 1985.  But who did that last song, Master and Servants?

Depeche Mode.  One of my primary targets of dislike from that era along with The Cure and The Smiths.  Though I have to admit, I appreciate it more now than I did then.  Which is to stay, still not very much, mostly.

Ah, should have guessed I could count on you guys.

I'm guessing that Master and Servants thing was the Cure or someone of that ilk, but I'm probably wrong. In 85 I was listening to the Dead a lot, among other things, but that wasn't one of them.

Now THIS I remember listening to a lot--Henley's Building the Perfect Beast is very much typical of that era. Nicely produced, too.

I personally disliked almost all of the post-Eagles Frey and Henley.  The same reaction I had to post-Police Sting -- great bands, bad solo artists.

But here's an album I liked a LOT in the mid-80s, like lots of others, Brothers In Arms.   :)

I have to admit I didn't really know what Bruce Cockburn was talking about in this song.  I envisioned something like a Saturn rocket launcher -- ya know, a big launching pad.  I thought, "what are the chances he could have something like that?"  So this song got no respect.

I get it now.  And BC is one of the good ones.  Let's of good stuff after this.

Got my vote too.

OK, the M&S song was Depeche Mode. I said the Cure--same thing. ;)

But you have to give the Cure some points for being one of many "four letter bands starting with the letter C".   8)
