one of the first boy bands ever.

That would be the Beatles, no?

"Boy bands" implies that they were contrived, put together by a svengali -- so the Beatles are 1/4 correct, I suppose.  The first boy band was probably either New Edition or New Kids on the Block, the latter really setting the template.

Well, New Edition predate NKOTB by 5 years (at least in terms of charted singles), so...

what? no menudo?

Oops!  When did they actually start out? (their only US charted single was in 1985, but I guess they were around long before that).

I didn't know Menudo ever charted a single!  I think I saw their TV show in 1983-84.

But thank you all for not dragging the Monkees into this.  I'm trying not to include them in this convo.   :?

Menudo's only POP chart hit was "Hold Me" (not a cover of any other "Hold Me") which reached #62 in '85. They also charted R&B the year before with "If You're Not Here (By My Side)."

The Monkees were referred to as the "pre-fab 4" (long before the Rutles stole that line). But by that definition The Sex Pistols are a boyband too

Sex Pistols are disqualified by the POC corollary.

I found that Mr Jones matured into quite a stud, however. Saw him in some history-of-rock docu and thought "Damn!".
