In Memoriam: The Temps' Papa
« on: September 03, 2006, 08:35:58 PM »
It was the third of September,
That day I'll always remember . . .
“The choir of children sing their song.  They've practiced all year long.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.”

Yeah, but he had three outside children and another wife -- and that ain't right!

I meant to post that yesterday, Sept 2nd, was also (as Joan Baez once sang) "The 33rd of August".

I don't remember if we've ever discussed this.. but Greg on CGSS just said that when Norman Whitfield was producing the Tempts version of PWARS, he assigned the first line to Dennis Edwards... not knowing that Edwards' own father had died on a Sept 3rd.  Edwards was furious, insisting that Whitfield had done it deliberately (even tho' the song had orig been written for the Undisputed Truth).

Bon anniversaire a mort, papa:

BTW, have you ever heard the Was/Not Was version? Kinda disappointing, as was the LP it came from (their follow-up to What Up, Dog?, one of my very favorite pop albums of the '80s) but worth a listen if you're a "Papa" completist.

Which I'm not, alas - but I'd really like to hear the Undisputed Truth version sometime.

It's that time of year again.  Hello and goodbye, Papa.

I love this thread.  :)

I don't know enough of the lyrics to quote without googling, but oh man, The Temps!  I rented Standing in the Shadows of Motown last week and watched some of it.   I also spent some time YouTubing the Temps an Four Tops.  great stuff.

It was the third of September
That day I’ll always remember, yes I will
cause that was the day that my daddy died

Never had a chance to see him, no
Never heard nothing but bad things about him
Mama, I’m depending on you to tell me the truth
Mama just hung her head and said

Chorus
Papa was a rollin’ stone
Wherever he laid his hat was his home
And when he died
All he left us was alone
(repeat)

Hey, mama, is it true what they say
That papa never worked a day in his life
Some bad talk going around sayin’
Papa had three outside children
And another wife
That ain’t right

Heard some talk about papa and his storefront preachin’
Talkin’ about saving souls and all the time leachin’
And dealing in dirt
Stealin’ in the name of the lord

But mama she just said

Chorus

Say I heard my papa was a jack of all trades
Is that what sent papa to an early grave?
Folks say papa would beg, borrow or steal just
To pay his bills
Hey, mama, folks say papa was never much in thinkin’
Spent most of his time chasin women and drinkin’
But mother, I’m depending on you
To tell me the truth

But my mama she just said

Chorus (2x)

(norman whitfield/barrett strong)

as I posted on FB today, I used to think the line was

"all he left us was a loan..."
You spin me right 'round, baby, right 'round

And dealing in dirt
Stealin’ in the name of the lord

I always heard that line as "dealing in DEBT" - as in, shady loan transactions.  Plus ca change, etc.

Me too, and likewise for Mike's read on "a loan/alone." I imagine we weren't the only ones.
Let's get right to it.
