Me too, and likewise for Mike's read on "a loan/alone." I imagine we weren't the only ones.

I was always convinced that this was a deliberate obfuscation, or rather a double entendre in the purest sense.

Because a loan is in fact a debt, and 'leave us alone' was surely what Mama and her boys would have prefered Papa to do.

I always heard that line as "dealing in DEBT" - as in, shady loan transactions.  Plus ca change, etc.

I've always heard "debt", too, but never "loan".
