I finally saw the movie last year and loved it (Ruth Gordon RULES!)... but Dave plays the clips WAY too much.

You know, I didn't really discover "What's Goin' On" -- both the single and the album -- until I was a junior in college.  Hearing the replay tonight sent me right back to Tuesday afternoons of my buddy Eddie McGeary getting me stoned after class and playing me something from his collection.  He had Grace Slick and the Great Society! -- I could have kissed him.  And he got me to buy Marvin on cassette instead of dinner one afternoon.

(I have another story about how Eddie and that demon weed nearly caused me to ruin an Amnesty International event, but that's for another day.)

Guilty displeasure of set: Stevie's "If You Really Love Me."  This is what I remember the early '70s sounding *like*, at least on the chorus, but I hate those sluggish verses.  Doesn't flow for me.

So, I find myself periodically in my church band having to play songs from JCS, Godspell, etc.  Christian musicals are just like Christian music; they generally can't stand on their own artistic merits, and need people to blithely accept them as art, tastebuds left at the door!

Maybe JCS should have been my pitch for this "Guilty Pleasures" convo.  I happen to adore it: The songs, the performances, the casting, the message, everything is just intuitively right about it to me.  Of course, it helps that I've long identified with Judas as represented there.
