14 Nov 2014: it's... 1993
« on: November 14, 2014, 07:13:44 AM »
I was gonna stick with my 1980 prediction. Feh.

'93 is not a year I have any great expectations for; plenty of pop nuggets have been requested over time but few have been played.

Stereo MC's "Connected" is our TOTHK -- a longtime Moreytrina in this year. Methinks I'll pass on this one.  But if anyone listens to the end, I'm curious whether AL mentions the return of the marathon.

I'm listening. Whereas the recent trip to 1994 mainly featured "alternative" radio standards, this set is the usual '90's mellow gold, KFOGy fare.

Well, whaddaya know? Here comes (song #8) Cannonball, probably one of the top five "alternative" radio standards. Maybe this will open the floodgates.

Don't Ask, Don't Tell (which was a flagrant First Amendment violation, IMO) --> Tears for Fears, Break It Down Again

Depeche Mode, I Feel You

The covers of CD singles aren't as fun as those of 45's. Go figure.

1. Stereo MCs, Connected

2. Porno for Pyros, Pets

3. Chris Isaak, Can't Do a Thing (to Stop Me)

4. Concrete Blonde, Mexican Moon

5. Donald Fagen, Tomorrow's Girls

6. New Order, Regret

7. Shaggy, Oh Carolina

Is Can't Do a Thing (to Stop Me) an example of "BOS for not being _________________?" In this case, San Francisco Days.

Well, that doesn't surprise me -- a sort of DM/AL greatest hits of '93. I'd call half of these LNs but then I've never had much use for '90s sets so I'm biased.

At least the TFF song was played in the right year -- Dave famously used to play it in '89 iirc.

This is one of those sets which touched many bases, but lacked a serious 'hey!' moment. Would probably greatly appeal to the casual listener.

The fact that Big Head Todd & The Snoozers was not played works to its benefit.

He probably got it confused with Sowing the Seeds of Love, which is understandable.

If memory serves, when the marathon debuted oh-so-many years ago, it basically ran 6-10AM. At some point, maybe around 2005-2006, it got moved back to ~7-11AM. I think it was because folks complained about how early it was.

That sounds right. I also recall when they first were planning the marathon, they asked Fogheads to vote when they wanted it to run: early Sat AM, 10PM Sat nite, or Sun nite. And Sat mornings won the vote.

I'm assuming they'll be in Mon-thru-Fri order...

That's a good question - I want to say that on occasion they did run in order, but more often than not it was a case of "52 Pickup".
