wow, those reviews are overly kind, IMHO.  And geoff, I'd forgotten about the CBS connection -- that probably played a part in selecting the Who this year. I'm sure it made the "suits" happy.  I think we've seen the last of "geezer rock" at the SB. For one thing, there's nobody left of that stature who hasn't done it yet (except maybe the Police). Next year the game is in Dallas; i predict something countrified. Whether they go for one big name (Kenny Chesney?) or do some sort of Carrie Underwear/Rascal Flatts/Sugarland combo platter remains to be seen.  OTOH, there's always Coldplay. ::)

ZZ Top was part of '97's performance, which I'd forgotten until a co-worker reminded me.

Shocking to me how relatively recent the SB switched over to rock performers!

Yesh, they are old, but they are one of my favorite punk bands, so it was good to see them!  in the NYT review, Jon Pareles writes:

And in “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” when Daltrey sang “the hypnotized never lie” to the television audience, he added, “Do ya?”

That "Do Ya?" has always been part of the song.  You can hear it on the studio version (although it's subdued) and I know I've heard it on other live versions.

TANC: This very thing was discussed on KPIG Monday afternoon. The deejay pointed out that ZZT are nearly as old as the Who but rock harder & better. It could happen!

Could they carry a full set by themselves, or would they get guest appearances? (John Mayer? Willie Nelson? Uncle Kracker?)

If you have VH1 Classic, they've been showing a program titled "Soul Train: The Hippest Trip in America". I don't know how old this is but it's getting a long run. I've seen it in the program guide about 3-4 times already. It's on Thursday afternoon at 3 PM and Saturday at 5:30 PM.

They have a string of recognizable, guitar-based hits (i.e., exactly what SB halftime has been about since "Nipplegate"). They'd do fine -- throw in some dancing girls (the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders?) for "Legs" and America will eat it up.

I watched about 10 minutes of it the other night.  It was pretty cool in it's Rock Doc way, but it was alreay after 11 on a school night so I had to bail ...  Saw a clip of the one time Don actually danced down the line.

Just watched it -- great stuff. The old clips (Al Green! JB! Marvin! J-5!) are just golden. Trvia: First white arist to appear on ST was... Gino Vanelli!  Now if VH-1 would start showing the old episodes, I'd be in heaven.

It's official: we will not be seeing the 5 Best Song nominees performed on this year's Oscarcast.

I didn't know David Bowie (who said he almost forgot the words to his song while he was lip syncing) and Elton John were both on ST.
