Most def. set of the week, although the competition wasn't that strong. None of the other sets were particularly bad; just, as we've been saying a lot lately, kinda "meh."

Wow, do I hate the *recording of* "(You Caught Me) Smilin'," even if I love the song itself.  That and Aretha's "The Weight" are literally difficult for me to listen to because of issues with the way the vocal's recorded.  Yet I have never seen anyone else ever mention this.  Is it just my ears?

yes, but for different reasons. i don't *hate* (you caught me) smilin', even if i notice the weird recording quality. it just reminds me of listening to a 45 through a not-so-good needle. but "the weight" is much worse. it sounds like listening to a really scratched 45 through an awful needle. especially when she says, "load."

I noticed this yesterday too.  There were examples of intentional vocal distortion that work, like some old bluesy Fleetwood Mac, where it makes you feel like you're in some smoky Chicago club, but Sly seemed to be going for something different, which I also didn't appreciate as much.

Totally agreed, and as much as I love "I Saw the Light", any lesser-played track from S/A would've made the '72 set truly transcendent instead of just very good.

But hey, this week we have at least 2 Friday the 13th sets to look forward to.

Listening just now, I understand what you're saying, but isn't his vocal on "Family Affair" recorded similarly?  That may be why I never really noticed (or singled out "(YCM)S") before. I just assumed it was an overall sound he was going for at the time.
