I suspect it will be quite a dull affair, but I asked for Blondie, Cher, and Britney Spears nonetheless.

oh and also "David Duchovny (Why Won't You Love Me?)"

Potential '99 Katrinas:

Moby, "Porcelain" and "Southside"
Old 97s: "Murder or a Heart Attack"
Fatboy Slim, "Praise You"
Filter "Take a Picture"
Guster "Barrel of a Gun"
Blur "Coffee & TV"

all have appeared at least twice, and we've only visited 1999 five times.

Kill me first if we hear "Smooth".

I'd prefer to hear "Tender" over "Coffee & TV" anyday.  I saw Blur perform this with the Harlem Boys & Girls Choir at the Roseland in NYC the same year  Moving stuff.

This song combines several annoying things:
- vocal histrionics akin to what you hear all over American Idol, Christina Aguilera, etc.;
- Gypsy-tinged guitar work (I can't tell you how I grew to hate the Gypsy Kings, and I blame one errant evening spent at the Steps Of Rome cafe in North Beach.  What an annoying place.)
- self-reflexive vocals (Carlos' name is dropped by this rapper)....

...but maybe ALL that's topped by the rapper introducing Jack Johnson.

Actually, I've grown less hostile to Jack Johnson.  I guess it comes with getting older .... and sleepier?

reminds me of a Steven Wright joke, sort of:

"When Jack Johnson listens to Sting, he goes back in time."

  9.  Sixpence None The Richer- Kiss Me
(TV: Who Wants to Be a Millionare-final answer-August!)
10.  Fatboy Slim- Praise You (B.O.S!)

wow, that's even less than 6 weeks.  Thanks for doing that research.  I prefer that set over today's (and I corrected my OP to say RGMike instead of Radical, but I think we're all on the same "This set blows" page).

I think Webster gave us a sign, we just chose to ignore it:  "Up next, Ass-a- ... eh, ANNAlisa ...."
Even Mr. "You are on fire" was kvetching!

yeesh, sheesh and cheeze Louise.  It looks like that G Love/Jackoff Johnson abomination was a bustout, FWIW.

This evening I was doing homework and needed something fairly boring and steady to listen to.  I knew just the station to turn to...  ::)

...and in that context, the set, this evening, didn't sound too bad.  Or at least it didn't start off that way.  Until Sting (w/ a song I otherwise like, actually) killed the momentum.  The clips for this set, otoh, were very good and somewhat sardonic.  Rodeo Clowns > "Dream Car" > Last Kiss = brilliant.

But what made this set an absolute tragedy, in my opinion, aside from the fact that it included not one, but two of the worst remakes of all time, was that the entire set was play it safe interchangeable borderline AAA/Alt standards, except for Sting, which was not on the correct side of the line for this set, and Lou Bega, which was not the right solo pop standard for a set like this.  She really needed something more poppy, or with more electro...like Cher, or Britney, or better yet...all 3!

Looks like the Santana is also a bustout.  To her credit, she hasn't played "Smooth" in a 1999 set yet.  So is Lenny's version of AW.
We've hit 1999 5 times.  Here's how many times we've heard what:

3
Filter- Take A Picture
Ben Harper- Burn To Shine
Moby & Gwen Stefani - Southside
Old 97's - Murder (Or a Heart Attack)

2
Sting- Brand New Day
Foo Fighters - Learn to Fly
Len- Steal My Sunshine
Guster- Barrel Of A Gun
Sinead Lohan- Whatever It Takes
Travis- Why Does It Always Rain On Me
Fatboy Slim- Praise You
Blur - Coffee & TV

1
Santana - Maria, Maria
Santana feat Dave Matthews- Love Of My Life
Santana - (Da Le) Yaleo
G. Love & Special Sauce/Jack Johnson - Rodeo Clowns
Pearl Jam - Last Kiss (also heard in Dave's remakes from hell set :X)
Lou Bega - Mambo # 5 (A Little Bit...)
Lenny Kravitz - American Woman
Ben Harper - Steal My Kisses (+1 in 2000)
Smash Mouth - All Star
Euphoria- Delirium
Eagle Eye Cherry- Save Tonight
Sixpence None The Richer- Kiss Me
Collective Soul- Run
Pretenders- Pop Star
Pretenders - Human
Moby- Porcelain
Ziggy Marley & the Melody Makers- Beautiful Day
Widespread Panic- Bears Gone Fishin'
Macy Gray- I Try
Loudon Wainwright III - Y2K
Bruce Cockburn - The Last Night of the World
Tom Waits - Hold On

rad, that was an extraordinary analysis. Seriously.  And sadly, most '90s sets (give or take) tend to me more like this than not. Nobody's asking for 10 pop-chart bustouts, but one per set (the equivalent to "Let the Music Play" last week) surely wouldn't make the target demo run screaming from the room, would it?

To be honest, I don't think AL is really all that familiar with Top 40 hits.  She had never heard "Let the Music Play" prior to playing it last week, which was a Billboard Top 10 hit back in '83.  When you're charting unfamiliar territory, you just don't know what's cool/good/pop, as opposed to bad/crappy/pop.  It all basically sounds the same, especially when there's no nostalgic factor.

I still can't believe she has mad love for the Foo Fighters.  I don't get that at all.  Other than that, she's the queen of the late 70s/early 80s alt stuff.  I'd love to check out her record collection sometime!

True, and I suppose that was Dave's late '80s/early '90s problem too.
