Title: 29 Sept 2011: It's...1991
Post by: sundaygal on September 28, 2011, 07:51:23 PM
The year punk broke, or something.  I'm hoping for some fine UK indie like Ned's Atomic Dustbin's "Grey Cell Green" or Trashcan Sinatras.  No mas R.E.M. ,por favor.

indeed -- the pickings in the rather lengthy thread on AL's page were kinda slim. I'm guessing Swellegant's Escape Club request was the "wrong year" suggestion that was supposed to make my head explode or something.  But I +1'd Radical's Londonbeat vote and added Prince and LLCoolJ (of course)

Oops! Thanks for catching that. I meant to request "Call It Poison". Will Correct.

He seems to be one of those folks who hates anything that's not guitar-rock.

He seems to be one of those folks who hates anything that's not guitar-rock.

But he generally has very good taste in guitar-rock.  Seriously, his suggestions in 70s rock are right in my wheelhouse.  We all have blind spots, and the arrogance to claim that the music our blind spots are objectively bad.  I like my blind spots.  I like to explore them.  Fred isn't quite so open minded, which is too bad.

When it comes to '91, I can suggest a few things, but they are generally so obvious that I don't see the point (like Nirvana).  So I usually don't suggest anything.  I gave one of Sundaygal's a +1 because I trust her judgement in these years, and her taste in indie/punk music.  One of the great things about being a member of this group is that I've been exposed to people with tastes different than mine, and have come to appreciate things I otherwise might never have.

ETA:  All that being said:  STYX!?!  Really Fred, I'm disappointed.

ETAA:  Ack.  I just checked the facebook thread -- I got Fred mixed up with Phil, who is actually the guy who makes the great early years suggestions...

Despite the calls for no REM, I'm BOSing "Texarkana". Great song with Mike Mills vocals.

It never occurred to me how much this Warren Zevon song sounds like Bruce. I bet either Bruce produced it, or Bruce's producer produced it (but I don't know who that is). It's so much like "Dancing in the Dark"...

U2 "Achtung Baby" is the first commercial album I bought. Got it on cassette for my brother for Christmas. We ended up spending that summer sitting in the back of our pickup truck in an orchard and watching the irrigation water go by.

Late at night, KDJK had the Rockline and Metal Shop programs. Really liked those.

Yup, looks like I lose my bet.

The LP, Mr Bad Example (I was thisclose to requesting the title track) was on the short-lived Giant Records -- WZ had been dropped by Virgin after 2 albums. Not a bad LP.

Turns out the song I was thinking of (which was very hard to think of while other songs were playing) was "Brilliant Disguise". No real connection to Waddy Wachtel there either, but at least I can set the record straight.

I can def hear that. But it's also similar to earlier Zevon ballads.

Will have to tune in this evening...but looks like a good set.  I wasn't surprised to see "There's No Other Way" because that's one of their "different" songs that's been getting hella regular rotation lately (seems to be a trend to put those into 10@10.)  I also fully expected "See the Lights," which was why I requested "Let There Be Love" instead.  "Alive" wasn't too necessary IMO, but everyone on FB seems to love it.  At least most of the standards were pretty upbeat.  I echo RGMike's sentiments about REM but I guess I can let this one go since it's not too overplayed.

I really miss Warren Zevon.  I never got to meet him, but did get to talk to him on the phone at least once.  We made him a guitar, all done in battleship gray!  His songs were so poignant and tender.

Anyone know which song won the popular BOS vote? I'd love to think it was the Zevon tune, but my guess would be U2 or Pearl Jam.

I agree about missing Warren, Geoff. I didn't get to see him a lot, but I've always really enjoyed his work, throughout his career. And Searching For a Heart is one of his best, imo.  I read his biography (penned by his ex-wife Crystal) earlier this year. It pulls no punches--he was a drunkard of the first order, then became totally OCD once he sobered up. And he wrote amazingly touching songs that could have come from no one else.

Had the good fortune to tune into the re-run stream in time to catch the last three songs of Wednesday's 83 set (including the Shannon tune--very nice) which meant that this set followed hard on its heels. Pretty fine set, which is something I rarely say about 90s sets. Very evocative of the time. I'd have BOS'd the Zevon tune, if I didn't already. VHM for the REM and BAD tunes.

Wish I'd realized in '91 how quickly the next 20 years would pass.
