in honor of Carlos Santana's B-day. Uh... OK.
I was wondering what DC's position on theme sets was in the "new 10@10 order". Now we know.

I'll be curious to see how current they get with this one. If they play White Stripes I'll plotz.

Frankly I'd much rather hear Meg and Jack than Eric.

Hahahaha! A disdain that unites the generations! ;) I'll be surprised if we *don't* hear White Stripes.

As I've mentioned more than once, if Eric had quit around 1974, I'd be more than ok with him (ducks chair that Rod throws).

Fogheads are suggesting a lot of, er, OLD guys. Oh, irony!

Gotta have some Prince. Oh, and I like Clapton. *waves fist*

In case you missed it, check out Clapton's work on the Bob Dylan 30th anniversary concert; 'tis quite smokin'. I don't know if I'd throw a chair, but...

well, that would include 461 Ocean Boulevard so that's good (despite Willie and the Hand Jive).
I certainly hope we get Joe Walsh.

I've no doubt he can still smoke in a live setting; friends who've seen him in the past few years have said as much. It's his studio output that gives one pause. Partly record company/ies fault I'm sure, but still, when has he written/recorded anything really interesting? That's really why those of us who make fun of him here do so. Clapton the Guitarist and Crapton the Commercial Commodity are 2 different guys.

This has the makings of a great survey question – name someone who is great in concert, not so much in the studio. Or vice versa.

I avoid FB apps, so I can't vote. Plus she left out Joe Walsh. (Glad to see her include James Honeyman-Scott.. Prob THE best concert I ever saw was being up close for a Pretenders' show with their original lineup. JHS was just fab.)

can't name Rush, they are perfect in both settings.

This is the classic Grateful Dead dichotomy. I actually like most of their studio albums, but many deadheads just think they suck compared to live versions.

Geoff, I'm glad you said that. The Dead were the first band that came to my mind as well. Some of their records I like a lot and I think are well performed and recorded (Workingman's, American Beauty, Terrapin, Blues for Allah) but others are pretty bad (Shakedown St., Mars Hotel, Wake of the Flood, Go to Heaven). And their early studio stuff I tend to lump into a third category of "poorly recorded with great enthusiasm," as they were almost a different band then.

I attempted to vote for Richard Thompson, because I figured the other two I'd most likely vote for (Beck and Zappa) had better chances of being chosen. Unfortunately, AL's wonky app didn't count my vote. C'est la vie.

so, it's an actual countdown? The Edge is #10?

Hmmm, did AL say its based on her poll? I'd imagine its just ten random examples. Wonder if we'll hear anything truly interesting/unexpected?

sounded to me like this is the top ten and #1 will be the last song.

I'm listening halfheartedly because I'm not a big guitar-solo guy; if I had made a request, it would have been for Mick Taylor's work on "Time Waits for No One" that we just discussed recently. I'm also big on Craig Chaquico's work, especially on the Spitfire album, but I'm largely alone in that.

digging it this AM. Cool electro-piano stereo separation, too!

Isn't this Clapton on My Guitar Gently Weeps?

Good point! It's both George and Eric, but EC handles the lead:

Heh. I'll actually VHM Jerry, much to Geoff's surprise. This was the period when I found the Dead and Dead-related stuff more than tolerable.

I hate when that happens. Next time have Black Coffee in Bed.

WOS "Sugaree." Aural heroin.
-
You knew we'd hear SRV.

You mean like...most of the other sets we've heard in the last 2 1/2 weeks?

oh my, that movie is so great. You should watch the follow-up, too, forget its name at the moment.
Ohh! great segue from School Of Rock into Layla.
-
BOS Jack Black when he was good. But I never need to hear "Layla" ever again. Ah, but those FB-Fogheads are in hog heaven.
heh -- we were hoping for Jack White and we got Jack Black instead.

After seeing the list posted from that other channel the other day (1987 set), I've gained new appreciation for AL. But yeah, I see your point.

Funny - that was a crossword clue in the Exam the other day (although for the life of me, I can not remember the specifics of the questions).
-
I take it Joe Satriani didn't make the cut? (Yay)

so, Carlos isn't a horse, But he *is* a hose. I'm confused.

Wait...what number is this Zeppelin? No Hendrix?

Wait...what number is this Zeppelin? No Hendrix?
this is song 9 by my count -- I'm guessing Jimi's the winner. Well, it was a LOOONG set, that's fer sure.
-
whew, for a second there, I thought Pete Townshend was talking, until I heard the riff to Whole Lotta Love. That would have been a head-scratcher. The Who is great, he wrote great songs, but he shouldn't be in this list.
Jimmy Page, OTOH...
Many of us have seen It Might Get Loud... I didn't like it all that much, truthfully, but I really enjoyed when Page did this riff in front of The Edge and Jack White. Those two looked like they were going to cry with joy. (I think I nearly misted up, too.)

#1 on the KOIT 10@10 Guitar special.

all-too-typical Foghead comment:
"Another fantastic set, Annalisa. You're really outdoing yourself lately!"
::)
ETA: the Edge was the "youngster" in the set -- DC will have a coronary!

Hey Dave, I just discovered that I still have my ticket stub from seeing the Experience Hendrix show with you! Been in a back corner of my wallet ever since.
The last line of this song was used to great effect in the graphic novel Watchmen, and they used it perfectly in the movie adaptation as well.

Excellent, that show really was quite an Experience, with all those great guest guitarists!

WOS "Sugaree." Aural heroin.
but this is Jerry/Dead when they were *good* ;)
kinda funny, I can usually count on Mike to needle me with anti-GD comments, but here's a song (not the Dead but Jerry's solo) that I really think is quite unremarkable compared to other choices, and he likes it! Go figure!
;D

Any interest (yourself, or anyone else really) to see Los Lobos next week at the Mountain Winery?
