Title: 17 Jan 2011: the Annual MLK Set

Confirmed by AL; some seriously off-the-wall suggestions on FB (Randy Newman's "Political Science"?? Seriously??)

That would be lovely.  But some Fogheads just seemed unclear on the concept.

"Like an unchecked cancer, hate corrodes the personality and eats away its vital unity. Hate destroys a man's sense of values and his objectivity. It causes him to describe the beautiful as ugly and the ugly as beautiful, and to confuse the true with the false and the false with the true." -- MLK quote from 1963, posted on Facebook yesterday by AARP California.

Just tuned into KPOO and they're playing Stevie's "Love's in Need of Love Today", which would be a fine suggestion for AL.

Love this version of "Wish I Knew How It Feels To Be Free" -- but I forget who it is.  AL played it once before, iirc.

I'm a collector of this song, but haven't heard this before.  Bobby Womack sounds plausible.

Looks as if someone's hijacked the KFOG site. Went there a couple minutes ago to tune in for today's set and instead got an error page with a "Dotnetnuke" banner. WTF?

Lucky my browser had cached the url for the cumulus player, which is working just fine.

We Shall Overcome, by Toots I think.  Good one from last year's set.

I remember an episode of the show "HOT L Baltimore" when the hotel staff wanted to strike, and one woman, who was supposed to be Puerto Rican, I think, thought the words were "We shall come over..."  despite the awesomeness of that little joke, I think the show lasted one season.

BOS Allen Toussaint (ETA) and Chambers Bros

Rattle and Hum's Pride.

I think so. If so, today's set has included 5 of the songs from last year's set (O'Jays, Sly, Nina, Toots, and U2).  But the five that we didn't hear before have lifted this set to new heights. That Annalisa, she gets it.

I posted this on FB too, but it's really amazing. Gary Byrd was a NYC deejay and he collaborated with Stevie Wonder (who also produced) on this black-history rap. A huge hit in the UK in 1983, pretty much unknown here. We ALL wear "The Crown"!

spacing out, correcting crappy tests while watching MSNBC, when suddenly they show a clip of MLK doing his last speech.  I remember the replay, wait for the commercial break, then tune in KFOG, to hear the clip of MLK's last speech.  TANC and powerful stuff indeed.  I really miss him, and I didn't appreciate him like I do now.  I always liked him, and was always inspired (hard not to be), but his words still resonate so deeply.
