I've asked for soul (Prince, Lisa Stansfield) and country (Garth's "Friends in Low Places")
One Foghead asked for "Sinead O'Connor, 'Since you took your love away' " and a while later someone else posted "+1 Sinead O'Connor, 'Since you took your love away' " -- I can't tell if the 2nd person was being snarky or not.
-
I'm guessing the answer to the question is "no".
Requested Warrant's "Cherry Pie", which would both qualify as not a Katrina and something that would throw some extra life into the set.
-
I just realized I should have requested Lightning Seeds, though "Pure" might not have been til '91. I associate that song with my senior year of high school more than most '90 tunes.

it is indeed a 1990 hit.
BOS this J&MC TOTHK.
ah, that 1990 regular,

BOS1 & 2 - JAMC - Head On & Concrete Blonde - Joey.
-
It's a longtime frequent flyer, but I love the husk in JN's voice on "Joey." A most deserved hit, and I wish they'd had more.
-
Another frequent flyer I'm always glad to hear: "Cuts You Up." VHM, still holding out my BOS vote.

too frequent for me to get excited, but it *is* a wonderful single, and as I've said before, I think 5 years earlier it would've been a #1. Radio was in a weird mood in '90 and "Joey" didn't get the traction it should've.

My inner goth chick is gonna give Peter Murphy a BOS3.

Haha, well played. LQTM.
-
more frequent flier-ness: INXS. I'm beginning to feel snoozy.
-
HM to Lisa Simpson's crazy be-bop. But I wish we'd segued into some TMBG more arcane than "Istanbul," great recording though it is.
-
BOS2 Lisa Simpson -- TMBG is (yes) another frequent flier. VHM, but I'm losing hope for anything earth-shattering here.
-
Continuing in the same good-but-not-earth-shattering vein, Happy Mondays' reworking of John Kongos into "Step On." I love dancing to Madchester beats.
-
BOS Peter Murphy -- I saw him in NYC in 89 and I *think* he played Cuts You Up. "This is a new one..."

I'll give this a BOS3, it's not as frequent as these other fliers (not in the AL era, anyway). "you're twistin' mah MELON, man!"

moi aussie!
gets my BOS.
-
WOS Black Crowes. Never liked 'em, never will.
-
Caaall the cops! BOS4 Happy Mondays. It gives me pills 'n thrills n' bellyaches. The Black Crowes just gives me a headache.

Nice!
BOS: "Nelson Mandela is a free man." The Soupy segue works nicely.
-
OMFG. BOS Soup Dragons!!! This set is sooo 1990 for me.
-
BOS #2 for Soup Dragons, another Madchester-ish remake that is loads of fun to dance to.
"These are the words I heard from my granddaddy..."
-
The Black Crowes just gives me a headache.
Bwahahaha! I think we were married in a previous lifetime, SG. The Crowes to me are just uninteresting and recycled. It's as if Skynyrd and the Georgia Sattellites got married and had a baby.
VHM "I'm Free", but really, none of the interesting suggestions on FB made it into this set.

Yes - this song especially. I remember showing up for a Pascal class, and that fall a few of my friends had discovered modern-rock radio and were suddenly talking about bands like Soup Dragons. It was refreshing for me after years of hair metal and arena rock dominating the conversation.

Hey Mark, when you get a chance, drop me a note offlist. My greetings to Christina, Adrian and Gabriel!

...It's as if Skynyrd and the Georgia Sattellites got married and had a baby.
no, it's as if Skynyrd and the Georgia Sattellites got married and after trying and failing to have a baby they adopted.
-
Pass the Tylenol, please. Another headache inducing band...Jane's Addiction.
-
BOS #3 for Jane's, track one off of Ritual de lo Habitual.
I always thought this much more deserving of mainstream success than "Been Caught Stealing"

ha! from a white-trash orphanage!
I'm thinking this Jane's Addiction thing is a bustout, but that doesn't mean I like it.

I just now saw this. Touche, RG. ;)
Gaz, Pure by The Lightning Seeds is such a perfect little pop ditty!

In reverse AL form, it went from best to worst. 1-5 all get BOS's.
But, true to AL form, she throws in an unnecessary grungy song at #10.
"Cuts You Up" and "Disappear" are total Katrinas, but totally good Katrinas.
I hear "Joey" all the time, but it sounded like a good song to play in 10 @ 10.
Annalisa can do better than "Istanbul" for TMBG. But the Tiny Toon Adventures had a good music video for it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mv-KcF3Rkv8 That was the first time I heard that song, as well as most of the other songs on the Tiny Toons Music Television episode.
She should have played the Happy Mondays next to the Soup Dragons. I thought they were the same band/song.
I do not like the Black Crowes, but I can't WOS it because they've done much worse. Also, I didn't realize before hearing this tonight what an influence they were on Ben Harper.
I think we've heard most of these songs before.
