or so says AL on FB. 43 comments so far, lots of requests for her to choose from, and I was #43 and yet I was the first to mention Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings fab version of "This Land Is Your Land". Woulda said X's "4th of July" but sundaygal beat me to the punch. Either one would be swell; if we get both it'll be amazing.

Love, love 4th of July by X - even though it seemed like an obvious choice.
Good call too with your request - We need some Woody Guthrie goin' on in the mix tomorrow.

AL gets kudos for playing the Chuck version rather than the Linda version.

"American Music" is NTM.

Too much monkey business in this American Music.
It's NTM too -- Blasters?

indeed, much as I love Ms Ronstadt, the orig is still the best. It's just Chuck & Little Richard still alive from the "Founding Fathers".

"American Music" is NTM.
Me too. Don't The Violent Femmes have a diff song, same title?

BOS2 Bobby Hill!

Let's don't forget James Brown!
My request ;D
I wonder if this a Don Was production. Sounds a lot like Was (Not Was).

Yup, and so do the Pointer Sisters.
Great segue from JCM ("let's don't forget James Brown") to the man himself. UH!

Jerry Lee is dead to me -- he's murdered too many wives (no wonder he's "The Killer"!)

most impressive -- another song Dave would've been afraid to play. The transformation of 10@10 from request-phobic to request-centric is complete.

Wow, I've never heard this -- interesting take.

OMFG2 -- the Yes cover of S&G's "America". Jon Anderson's probably never seen a Mrs Wagner's Pie in his life.
-
BOS Schoolhouse Rock, "The Great American Melting Pot." Wish we'd gotten the whole song, it's one of Dorough's best.
"I'm Just a Bill" would have been a good choice, too.
Love the Neil Diamond!
another BOS to Yes. It's patriotic prog rock, dude.

Maybe its because I've been listening to Laurie Anderson's latest album Homeland, but I'm not especially patriotic today.
-
BOS5 Mr Simon's eternally lovely "American Tune"

Then Paul's "American Tune" should be your BOS, as it is mine.

well, it's like New Years Eve: there's so much pressure to go out and have a good time on Dec 31st, that a lot of people end up unfulfilled and disappointed. Own your Laurie-inspired feelings for now, and in a few more weeks you can have an August Fourth celebration!

BTW, if y'all make requests on her FB page... check the next morning to see if see clicked "like" on your comment; it's usually a clue that she's gonna play it or at least attempt to.

as far as our shraytabase is concerned, at least 4 bustouts there (Berry, Blasters, Neil's "America" and SJ&tDKs). I suspect that Dave may have played Chuck B back in the "Fifties Friday" era, tho'.
-
Looks to be another excellent set in AL's lengthy (but not quite consecutive) string of them. Shocked that none of you guys know American Music--their album of the same name is probably my favorite of theirs. It was long out of print but reissued about 8 or 9 years ago.
And props to the various denizens of this space for calling out so many of the songs that made it into today's set (and bonus track). I'm sure she could come up with a great set on her own, but it's cool that she's taking suggestions, and by the number that come from the contributors here, I think she digs that we're as into it as we are.

thank you kindly sir! I really enjoyed hearing it on the replay this morning. We're playing a couple of the tunes tomorrow morning. We probably won't quite reach the funky level of Sharon and Ray, but I'll try and channel the energy!
