Just noticed that in the last two weeks, the "newest" year-based set AL has done is 1980--with several great theme sets, and a couple of 60s sets for good measure. Nicely played, AL--although I'll bet that run ends tomorrow.
I've been thinking the same thing. Have to wait & see.
If it's a less interesting latter day set, maybe y'all can take one last crack at my scavenger hunt.

I'm thinking either '90s or a surprise theme (like a "food" set inspired by the article on food songs in yesterday's Chron)

VHM to Gin Blossoms, but I'm hoping for at least one WTF bustout in '96.
-
Wilco trying too hard to have a radio hit with "Outtasight." HM anyway.

You read my mind. AL says "every year is a good year" but i beg to differ. She mentioned "The macarena" -- she wouldn't do that to us, would she? I predict some JCM.
ooo! I can BOS No Doubt. Gwen S when she was good.
-

Undoubtedly a bustout though.

Yup, No Doubt's breakthrough was 14 years ago. Oof.

I didn't know they were still around in 96. :P
BOS for Spiderwebs.

I always loved this line:
"...and it's all your fault I screen my phone calls."

Not the best song on Being There, but as that album was something I listened to a lot in late 96, I'm enjoying hearing this in the context of 10@10, so I'll give it a thumbs up. And strangely enough, likewise for No Doubt, even tho I was only hearing it via radio play.
-
Yup, No Doubt's breakthrough was 14 years ago. Oof.
And if you'd told me then that Gwen Stefani would become such a media icon that Carly Fiorina (in the last year of her HP tenure) would trot her out on stage at her CES Keynote speech as her celebrity du jour, I'd have said you were certifiable.
-
The "Upcoming" window on the player just busted a song that we'll be hearing later--another serious BOS candidate that should take away anyone's pain. 'Nuff said for now.
-
VHM "Smelly Cat"! Phoebe still rules.
ah, it's not the mid-'90s without Mr Cheekbones.

indeed, her post-ND popularity baffles me. "Hollaback" and "Rich Girl" are easily 2 of the most annoying songs of the last 20 years.

I saw that, so I'll wait until it rolls around before I start pining for the other song of theirs that I've always wished we'd hear on 10@10.

In a previous mid-90s set she started playing it and then stopped it and said something like oh sorry, we don't have time for that. LOL
-
i'll BOS Chris Isaak, not his best, but I'm a fan
-
Another VHM Keb' Mo'
-
VHM to Keb' Mo'.

The cheek is hardly the bone that comes to mind when I think of Chris Isaak.

I should add that I witnessed this with my own eyes in 2005, and aferwards I was one of a handful from the audience pulled aside to give HP's on site Mktg team immediate feedback, in return for a $10 bill. And at least two others in addition to me wondered if Gwen's appearance might not fall under the category of 'damning with faint praise', compared to the much higher profile celebs coming out on stage with Microsoft, Intel, etc.
-
Wow, this REM piece earns a BOSFRA--I don't think I've EVER heard this on the radio.

Agreed. She has a few decent solo songs (Cool, 4 in the Morning) but those are few and far between.

WOS any Adam Sandler movie; BOS2 Beck

Very strong sequence here with REM, Suzanne Vega and Beck. Great stuff.

BOS to "Where It's At." What about those who go both ways, AC/DC?
-
yay for Beck. I saw him at the next year @ Henry J Kaiser Aud in Oakland. Sneaker Pimps opened:

Hint: the other three are all R'n'R HoF bands with very prominent guitarists.
Furhter hint: two of the above-mentioned three guitarists were in even in a recent movie together.

Used to love this Beck song when it was out...now, eh, it's okay. Still gets killed from overplay on every single alternative and AAA (except KFOG) station. Still worth a VHM tho.

Ah, the old BASS ticket stock with the formally-dressed fish. Now THAT takes me back...
I saw him sometime around then at Freeborn Hall at UCDavis, but can't recall the date. Good show, abominable acoustics.
BOSwhatever for JC and I've Been Everywhere. Who knew this would end up as an ad for a motel chain?
-
BOS3 Mr Cash.

Indeed!

What's the question?
-
How many of these places have YOU been to?
"I've Been Everywhere"
I was totin' my pack along the long dusty Winnemucca road,
When along came a semi with a high an' canvas-covered load.
"If you're goin' to Winnemucca, Mack, with me you can ride."
And so I climbed into the cab and then I settled down inside.
He asked me if I'd seen a road with so much dust and sand.
And I said, "Listen, I've traveled every road in this here land!"
[Chorus:]
I've been everywhere, man.
I've been everywhere, man.
Crossed the desert's bare, man.
I've breathed the mountain air, man.
Of travel I've had my share, man.
I've been everywhere.
I've been to:
Reno, Chicago, Fargo, Minnesota,
Buffalo, Toronto, Winslow, Sarasota,
Wichita, Tulsa, Ottawa, Oklahoma,
Tampa, Panama, Mattawa, La Paloma,
Bangor, Baltimore, Salvador, Amarillo,
Tocapillo, Baranquilla, and Perdilla, I'm a killer.
[Chorus]
I've been to:
Boston, Charleston, Dayton, Louisiana,
Washington, Houston, Kingston, Texarkana,
Monterey, Faraday, Santa Fe, Tallapoosa,
Glen Rock, Black Rock, Little Rock, Oskaloosa,
Tennessee, Hennessey, Chicopee, Spirit Lake,
Grand Lake, Devils Lake, Crater Lake, for Pete's sake.
[Chorus]
I've been to:
Louisville, Nashville, Knoxville, Ombabika,
Schefferville, Jacksonville, Waterville, Costa Rica,
Pittsfield, Springfield, Bakersfield, Shreveport,
Hackensack, Cadillac, Fond du Lac, Davenport,
Idaho, Jellico, Argentina, Diamantina,
Pasadena, Catalina, see what I mean-a.
[Chorus]
I've been to:
Pittsburgh, Parkersburg, Gravelbourg, Colorado,
Ellisburg, Rexburg, Vicksburg, Eldorado,
Larimore, Admore, Haverstraw, Chatanika,
Chaska, Nebraska, Alaska, Opelika,
Baraboo, Waterloo, Kalamazoo, Kansas City,
Sioux City, Cedar City, Dodge City, what a pity.
[Chorus]

find each of those vocabulary words in a well-known song.

Ahh, the hint tells me the guitarists, but not the songs...
I bet the group for "bower" also used the word "hedgerow", eh?
You there, Mark? Since it's late, I'll say the groups are Led Zeppelin and the White StripesU2, but I don't know what the songs are.
ETA: OK, I know what the songs are now. I never would have gotten the LZ song, but I wasn't remembering that the Edge was in "It Might Get Loud" until I looked it up. By then I'd given up.
-
Yep, I'm here. You understood the hint correctly, feel free to give out the songs.

Missed the last tune due to a phone call from one of my freelance clients, but it's cool. I have heard enough Cake to last me to the rest of my days. Being as they hailed from Sacramento I saw them a lot in their nascent years, opening for everyone from Jonathan Richman to the Meat Puppets, and John McCrea was always a bit to smug for my taste, even when they were doing three sets a night in some bar. He's got his schtick down though, and gotta say they're one of the better bands to spring from Sac-burgh. Far better than Steel Breeze or Tesla (nee City Kid), up there with Bourgeois Tagg and the Deftones.

I never knew Tesla started out as "City Kid" -- did they change because of City Boy?

Not sure why they changed--that happened about the time they got signed, so it may have been pressure from the record company. But they played the Oasis Ballroom for years under the old name, then suddenly they had a record out and they were Tesla. Can't say that was a bad move--City Kid is a crappy name.
-

OK, "bower" is in "Gallow's Pole", which I never woulda guessed. And "strewn" is in "Sunday Bloody Sunday", which I probably woulda gotten given time to think about it.

too bad, you could do so much with "City Kid": Shitty Kid, Pity Squid, etc.
They got tired of being made fun of. "Tesla" foils most punny wags, I'd bet.
