starting with Hold On Tight To Your Dream (correct title?)
-
Yep, correct you are, sir.
Reminds me of a yearly shopping package we had to do at CNET. HATED it. I was kinda hoping for a Here Comes Summer set, but I guess this is a little less cliche. Let's see what AL does with it.

Yup. ELO en francais. Accochez-toi! (or something)
-
looks like The Sound has the same idea:
10:02 - My Father's Eyes by Eric Clapton
-
One of Dylan's Forever Young's, the slow one from Planet Waves.
I imagine we'll be hearing the "wear sunscreen" thing
-
and with Viagra, dads can stay Forever Hung.
-
Thank God this its not Rod Stewart Forever Young
-
looks like The Sound has the same idea:
10:02 - My Father's Eyes by Eric Clapton
somebody better play Gladys' "Daddy Could Swear (ah Declare!)"
-
Dylan's Forever Young. Was going to guess this to be a bustout, but I'd have been wrong. Two previous appearances, one in '74 and one in a Dylan's Birthday set from 2005.
-
John Lennon's Beautiful Boy

However, I don't care if we hear Cat's In the Cradle or not. Cat Stevens Father and Son might be cool though.

I like the Rod song, thought it was completely separate, but chk this out:
Rod Stewart
Rod Stewart recorded a song titled "Forever Young", which was released as a single and included on his Out of Order album in 1988. The song was remarkably similar to the Bob Dylan song of the same title, sharing not only a similar melody but many of the same lyrics. Upon threat of a plagiarism suit, Stewart acknowledged that he had subconsciously plagiarized the older song, and agreed to share his royalties with Dylan.

BOS John, "Beautiful Boy"
-
John Lennon's Beautiful Boy
I was about to say, "hey, good guess!" and then I remembered you've got a two-minute lead on all us streamers! ;D
-
will we get School's Out by Alice Cooper? for the grads?
both songs sof ar have been kind of wistful looks back at aging. Hold On To Your Dreams, Forever Young

me, too. I thought we were playing "guess the song" -- which is why I mentioned Alice Cooper.

apparently they played the Cat Man's "F&S" on the Morning Show this week. Maybe AL will give us the Ugly Kid Joe remake of "CITC"

I'd call "Hold on Tight" a look forward -- an entreaty to grads.

Interesting. I thought Stewart had intended to cover Dylan with some new lyrics, thought it was an impressive rearrangement even if I wasn't nuts about the song in any of its incarnations.
Father's Day, btw, is a sore spot for me, so I'll mostly stay out of this set.
-
HM to Cliff Huxtable.
DirecTV repair guy just showed up. Hope I don't have to miss more than a song or so.
-
BOS2 Paul Simon's "Father & Daughter" -- pretty nice for a throwaway tune written for a cartoon.
-
well, it's getting kind of thick here for me, as I prepare for the wedding on Father's Day. Today I have to wash the car, deliver some ice cream to the caterer, etc. Cosby clip and corny Simon song are making me an easy mark right now.
I have my Father's Day blog reflection set to release on Sunday morning, so that's taken care of.
-
I suppose my least favorite Paul Simon tune was inevitable, but here's hoping "Cat's In The Cradle" is not.
If we don't get Alice Cooper, then what was the point of making it "...& Grads"?
-
I'd like to hear the Graduate - Plastics Plastics Plastics

Even I'm not sappy enough for Jon Mayer!

If she does it'll be good for a laugh, but I'll have to switch stations. I knew those guys & they were a bunch of wankers.

I don't think of School's Out as a grad song, as much as I like it.

indeed. WOS -- borderline creepy lyrics. That progression of fathers/daughters/lovers/mothers just bothers me.
-
Even I'm not sappy enough for Jon Mayer!
I tuned away from this one, but this song -- iirc -- seemed crafted to reveal the "sensitive" side of Jon Meyer. In other words, he was trying to get laid.. :)

"School's out forever, school's out completely." It sure was for me every time I graduated from somehting.

er, doesn't that describe half his catalog?
WOS2 (and sorry, Gaz) "CITC", Harry at his middlebrow-sentimentality-laden worst.
-
Jon Meyer made me tune into The Sound for a bit, and they just played Father And Son by Cat Stevens, then they played Paul Simon's "Father & Daughter".
-
"Cat's in the Cradle" used to actually make me cry as a kid.

Mike, too. But for the other reason.
-
The song I used to associate with last day of school, oddly enough, is Kenny Loggins' "Heaven Helps the Man (I'm Free)," from Footloose.

sorry, it's sap. And I was a huge Chapin fan. He knew how to step right up to the sappy line without crossing it, most of the time ("W.O.L.D", "Circle"). So of course when he went overboard he scored a #1 single.
-
...Cat Stevens Father and Son might be cool though.
The player shows it in the On-Deck circle at the moment.

a cliché is a cliché because it's so true

<copy editor mode> I like the song myself, but there's a difference b/w a cliché and sappiness< />

outside of scrabble, not much of a difference!

So John Mayer followed the Simon tune? And then John Hiatt, yes? I'd forgotten how funny he could be live.

Harry Chapin before Hiatt
-
I know this "Oh Daddy" is a fave, but I'd've preferred F.Mac's, or Madonna's "Oh Father".
-
BOS #1 to my son's namesake (sorta).
-
BOS - Adrian Belew Oh Daddy
-
Who called out for the "Wear sunscreen" schtick? You got it.
-
BOS3 Mr Luhrman. He makes godawful movies but this was a terrific recording.
"live in NYC for a while... but leave before you get too hard
live in Northern Calif for a while... but leave before you get too soft"
ETA: Luhrman produced (and gets the label credit) but the voice is that of Aussie voice actor Lee Perry.

i just realized Geoff is marrying off his daughter on Father's Day -- how sweet! congratulations on the convergence, Geoff. :)

thanks, which only intensifies the preponderance I have for excessive sappiness!

I love this Joey Ramone "Wonderful World"
-
uber-BOS4 Joey's fantabulous cover of "What a Wonderful World". One of my play-it-at-my-funeral songs.
-

Indeed, hope you are able to revel in a special day for you and Martha, as well as your daughter and her soon-to-be husband.
BOS Joey Ramone It's A Wonderful World. Think this is the wrapup?
-
OMG, have we dispensed with computer-game-guy saying "That was swell, wasn't it?"

Sounds like Geoff wasn't the only one confronting their emotions during this set! Annalisa seems to be having problems holding back the waterworks, too.
-
OMG, have we dispensed with computer-game-guy saying "That was swell, wasn't it?"
At least for today. Fingers crossed.

3 weeks in and we've followed the exact same pattern each week:
1 '60s
1 '70s
1 '80s
1 '90s
1 "theme set"
I'm good with that if it means a '60s set every week.

That's one of the things I wanted to ask AL about, if I get the chance.

Geoff, just noted your current choice of a sig line ("It's all a dream we dreamed, one afternoon long ago" from the Dead's Box of Rain). Nice choice, and very appropriate given the child/father dynamic of the song. I'm sure you know this, but for the rest of the assembled, Phil Lesh wrote it for his ailing dad, collaborating with Robert Hunter for the lyrics. I recall Hunter once saying that "the words came as fast as the pen would pull."
-
Bonus: the Cat Man. the sort of sentiment that's not over-the-line, but still quite moving..
-
BOS2 Paul Simon's "Father & Daughter" -- pretty nice for a throwaway tune written for a cartoon.
The opening riff's totally lifted from "I Knew You Were Waiting for Me," innit?

I'm not hearing it, but I'll YT both next week and play 'em back-to-back.

Heard this again on the way down to HMB Saturday (replay) for a wedding rehearsal luncheon. Wedding today was beautiful, and as is customary at a wedding, there is often an attempt to get the dad to cry during the father/daughter dance. I knew this going in, but was helpless when the band played this song! TANC indeed!

I would like this because this would be something for everybody. I wouldn't listen to early 70's or 90's but this would be fair.
