Nope -- 1979. This sucks -- Dave's Earth Day set is one of my very faves of the year.

I rarely hear this Babys song, so I never noticed until now that John Waite recycled its "Every time I think of you" opening line for "Missing You."  He can self-plagiarize, no matter what his friends say.

I'll do Earth Day on my blog on Friday - just to have an excuse to post "Out in the Country."  Today I wanted to do something bitter, though.

it always turns out bad.

here's last year's Earth Day set:

Quote
1.   Three Dog Night - Out in the Country
2.   John Farnham - You're the Voice
3.   Cat Stevens - Where Do the Children Play (BEST OF SET!!)
4.   Joni Mitchell - Big Yellow Taxi
5.   Toy Matinee - Last Plane Out
6.   Marvin Gaye - Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)
7.   Jack Johnson - The Horizon's Been Defeated
8.   David Crosby & Graham Nash - Critical Mass/To the Last Whale
9.   Grateful Dead - Throwing Stones
10.   Spirit - Nature's Way

The Babys song led two '79 sets from 2007--good stuff in both of 'em.

Ah, this is the first of those, from Jan 10, 2007. Both sets have Supertramp and Dire Straits representation, and there's a '79 evergreen that shows up in both, as well as a few other nuggets. Should be enjoyable.

HM What Kenny and Michael Believe.

Melanie once sang "Bitter Bad", but I say bitter good.  (Fine blog post, bub.)

I always thought that was a clip from Thank God It's Friday. Which would mean one of those women was Debra Winger. But I could be wrong.

Overall BOS to Communique. This is the closest we get to a rarity in this set--twice in the DB, including this instance.

I'd have thought so too, but the DB says otherwise. Gone Hollywood is underplayed in terms of KFOG's daily playlist, but it's the leader among the 6 songs off Breakfast In America with 8 appearances. Take The Long Way Home is second with six, Just Another Nervous Wreck has four plays, and BIA, Goodbye Stranger and The Logical Song tie with three apiece.

Not at all what I'd have guessed either.

Is it worth the effort to even e-mail KFOG and complain (in the nicest possible way, of course) about no Earth Day set? This isn't one of those once-in-a-while sets like April Fools, it's one Dave has done every year for as long as I can remember.

Efforts might be better directed in expressing a desire to get Dave producing new 10@10s again. I am thinking that it's management that's dragging their feet by this time, not Dave. If they axed Benson as a cost-cutting measure, perhaps they feel they can afford to just play re-runs that they already own and not pay DM to create new ones. They need to know that we are starting to look elsewhere for fresh material and tuning away from KFOG.

I think this may be the Clubhouse's consensus #1 song.  I can't think of any other one that gets so many people to sing its praises, and never a word of dissent.

Now *that* would be a cool thing to track -- our daily voting as a club.  If Dave ever comes back, we might try to develop something.  Voting would have to be strictly limited though.  One BOS, one WOS, maybe one HM.

Ooh, good call - I enthusiastically love that one.

Since there are some stats geeks among us - maybe someday we could some polls on this site to replicate what we do at the Singles Jukebox: a song is proposed, people vote on it on a 0-10 scale, and songs are ranked by average.  "I Do the Rock" would get a 10 from me; "Water Song" probably a 9.
