here's the text of my email on Tuesday morning.
Hi Dave,
Just a thought. Bo Diddley is such a giant in R'n'R history, and his signature beat has
been used so well by so many for so long, maybe you could do a special set for him on
Friday in honor of his passing.
Off the top of my head here's a short list of great songs with the Bo Diddley beat:
"Not Fade Away," "Willie and the Hand Jive," and "I Want Candy" all have multiple
versions to choose from. And then there's the Who's "Magic Bus," Bruce Springsteen's
"She's the One," U2's "Desire," Pretenders' "Cuban Slide" and George Michael's "Faith".
Cheers!
Mark

I'm expecting this to be a pretty short set, but a good one.

Frankly, if somebody gave me a coat made out of a nanny goat... I'd dump him immediately.

BOS1 Bow Wow Wow, one of the great covers of the '80s.

Could be long if we get Dead's "Not Fade Away" + Bruce "She's The One" + Quicksilver "Mona" + Thorogood "Who Do You Love" = Excellent set!
-
BOS for "Panic in Detroit"! I never would have thought of this one.
-
Cool. I want candy
Can't BOS just one. Enjoying not fade away.
Everything sounds like hand jive.
-
Bowie "Panic In Detroit"!!! ;D
-
BOS2 "Panic in DEE-troit", tho' I think its inclusion is a tad questionable -- a little too slow to be truly Diddleyish, IMHO.

WOS Crapton's Hand Job.

And here's da hand jive.

Speaking of slow, here's your favorite slow hand. Regarding the Bowie, I almost edited my post to say I don't really hear the unvarnished BDB in PID, but I could hear how he got from there to here. As it were.

About 9:20 they played Stevie Ray's "Tightrope" and since I had the Bo Diddley beat on the brain I noticed it here, even slower and more bluesy, but unmistakeable nonetheless.

AMG has her DOB as 10/31/1965 (heh, heh, I momentarily had a typo as 'her BOD'...and quite a nice BOD it is.)

BOS for the BOS(S). He played this in San Jose when I saw him. Great tune, and so fun to hear live.
-
Dave, do you recall when we were at the Bruce concert & when the 1st notes of "She's The One" came on I leaned over and said that this was my favorite song with the Bo Diddley beat and wouldn't it be cool if KFOG did a whole set of them?
-

Fraid I don't; apparently, I don't even remember where I heard it. Oh well, brain not what it used to be, if it ever was.

VHM U2, what Coldplay wish they were.
-
So far every tune came from my Tuesday email except "Panic in Detroit" & "Who Do You Love".
BOS #4 U2.

Yeah, I figgered it out. But my earlier post said that I heard it in SJ.

Sorry to have missed "The Magic Bus", but who knew "American Woman" & "Rosanna" had the beat?
ETA: I guess I didn't miss them, so much as Dave didn't play them. Don't want to confuse anyone who reads this post but missed the set.
-
So, a quick Db analysis. Bo Diddley makes his artist debut in the Db. The BowWowWow & the George T. tunes get only their 2nd spins, and surprisingly the Bruce was only the 3rd appearance. Closest thing to a Katrina is (equally surprisingly, imho) "Faith".
ETA: missed it the first time around, but the Stones & Clapton were also a bustouts, and the U2 was also only the 2nd time around.
So any time you get 3 bustouts and 3 only-once-befores, you have to conclude that this was a GREAT set.
-
I actually think Clapton's cut is very good. The beat really has that floating thing going on.
06/06/2008 - FRIDAY! Today it's..."The Beat"....(Bo Diddley)!!
1. Bo Diddley - Bo Diddley
2. Bow Wow Wow - I Want Candy
3. Rolling Stones - Not Fade Away
4. David Bowie - Panic in Detroit (BEST OF SET!!)
5. Eric Clapton - Willie & the Hand Jive
6. George Thorogood & the Destroyers - Who Do You Love
7. Bruce Springsteen - She's the One
8. George Michael - Faith
9. Pretenders - Cuban Slide
10. U2 - Desire
BONUS TRACK: Beck - Black Tamborine
-
BOS2 "Panic in DEE-troit", tho' I think its inclusion is a tad questionable -- a little too slow to be truly Diddleyish, IMHO.
Yeah, might as well include "Spiders & Snakes" if you're going this route. Still and all, well played.

Yes, indeedy. Dave's "unique" theme sets this year (i.e., the ones that aren't annual events like Tax Day) have been firing on all cylinders, generally, and have tended to include multiple bustouts (see: The Comic Book Set).
