Discovery-of-the-Week: thanks to 2NG (this actually charted in the UK Top 40) I heard this today for the first time -- an anti-bullying ballad from 1965 (!) by Jody Miller, best-known for her parody of "King of the Road", "Queen of the House". Check out the lyrics on "Home of the Brave" --amazing, really.

ETA: I'm astonished to see this got to #25 in the US.
great stuff!  I'm going to share it with the counselors here.  We had a guy in our school who showed up every September with long hair, and went through the whole school board process before he was forced to cut his hair.  Dinosaurs indeed.

courtesy of Larry Grogan: see how long it takes you to recognize which classic tune is being BLATANTLY ripped off here. Note the writer credit on the label is NOT the orig songwriters so this really was out-and-out theft...

Saddest part is how the rhythm totally sucks.

Just heard the worst. lyric. evah:

Like candy
You're my "Now & Later"
Like Fresh Prince
I'm the Will to your Jada

eek.

And what song does Fitz & the Tamtrums' "Moneygrabber" sound like? That intro makes me think of ELO.
You spin me right 'round, baby, right 'round

I hear a little bit of ABC's "Look of Love" in the intro.

It always reminds me of LS's "That Smell" for some reason.

Find of the Week:  This came out 2 years ago but I just got hipped to it yesterday thanx to Soma-FM's Xmas stream.

http://www.amazon.com/Christmas-Groove-Various-Artists/dp/B002RB58XO/ref=pd_rhf_gw_cpp_tab0_p_t_1

In the Christmas Groove is a compilation of forgotten R&B holiday 45s, mostly one-offs on small labels that never made it onto LPs and were thought lost forever.  Some amazing stuff.  An ex-roommate of mine had a copy of the amazing "Black Christmas" by the Harlem Children's Chorus and I've been looking for it for years.

Heard this new song from The Bangles during their show.  It's pretty great!

new Kate Bush album out Nov 21.  NPR preview and track streams here:

http://www.npr.org/2011/11/13/142133269/first-listen-kate-bush-50-words-for-snow?ps=cprs

"In seven long tracks, the album does just what the best of Bush's work has done since she burst on the scene, Spandex bat wings flapping, at the dawn of the New Wave era. It melds extravagant tales to unconventional song structures, and spirits the listener away into Bush's distinctive hyperreality."

She uses drummer Steve Gadd throughout and Sir Elton John makes an appearance, too.

Last week on New Music Thurs. on the DC and Renee show, DC and Renee played the new song by Gotye ("Somebody That I Used To Know"), and gushed over how it's the most awesome thing they've heard in a long time.  And lo and behold...he actually added it.   :o  (It's nice to actually hear a song get added after the DJs profess their love for it...unlike what happened in the no PD days.)

The song is pretty trippy.  Apparently Live 105 added it too, although they'll probably drop it in a week or two as they always do for new songs.

Who is it that does the dreadful remake of Paula Abdul's not-great-to-begin-with "Straight Up" that I keep hearing? It sounds like it's a rapper who can't actually... y'now... SING. Fingernails on a blackboard.

The original 1968 version of "Midnight Confession" by the Evergreen Blues... copied note-for-note by the Grass Roots later that same year.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YydwL0kl_5o

apparently they also did a cover of "Try a Little Tenderness" (using Otis' arrangement) before 3DN...

Today's discovery: the Nails (of "88 Lines about 44 Women" fame) doing the Hombres' classic "Let it All Hang Out" -- I don't remember this at all, but it's kinda cool.
