Probably what you don't want to know: Daughtry has a new album coming out soon, for on which one track he sounds like "Vintage Edwin McCain". I weep already.

Not new but NTM: this Northern Soul nugget from 1974 was COMPLETELY ripped off by Maxine Nightingale 2 years later.

a singer called Sharon Tandy doing a song called Hold On --  A pretty good Dusty Springfield impression, lots of psychedelic fuzz-guitar, too.

... heard it while listening to "Pineapple Juice" one of the choices in my itunes radio under "70's Retro"

here she is lip synching:

Definitely can hear the parallels with Dusty Springfield, but the singer I first thought of was Chi Coltrane, or at least certain aspects of her delivery. Probably more likely that Coltrane was derivative of Sharon Tandy than the other way around, since Tandy preceded Coltrane by a good five years.
Let's get right to it.

NTM, and Gaz will especially find this interesting -- the Windjammers, "Poor Sad Child". Sounds like Norman Whitfield copped an idea here.

An obscure relic unearthed: in May of 1969, this little Lawn Guyland band released their version of "Easy To Be Hard" -- several months before 3DN's cover. And despite being on a major label (Columbia!) and getting airplay on Top 40 powerhouse WMCA in NYC... this version went nowhere. Simple and lovely, tho'. Ladies and gennlemens, I give you The Stony Brook People:

I enjoyed it, and found the video warm and fuzzy in a comfortable way.  What a time capsule those pictures are!

NTM, anyway: The Tremeloes doing "Yellow River" -- apparently they did it first and then decided not to release it, so they replaced the vocals with (Jeff) Christie's (he had written the tune for them) and he had the hit.

Discovery-of-the-Week: thanks to 2NG (this actually charted in the UK Top 40) I heard this today for the first time -- an anti-bullying ballad from 1965 (!) by Jody Miller, best-known for her parody of "King of the Road", "Queen of the House". Check out the lyrics on "Home of the Brave" --amazing, really.

ETA: I'm astonished to see this got to #25 in the US.
