The Drive, week of 3/7/11
« on: March 07, 2011, 07:40:43 AM »
Mon 3/7/11: 1979

Bob kicks off a week without a single '80s set. Yay!!

VH look for beautiful girls; CDB find the Devil.

BOS and Cheeze for Breakfast: Rainbow's "Since You've Been Gone". VHM the Iggles finest ballad, "I Can't Tell You Why"

Mother do you think they'll get sick of this Floyd?  VHM lesser-heard Supertramp.

BOS2 Tim the Enchanter!

ELO: surely "snake in the grass/ break your glass" was orig written as "Snake in the grass/kick your ass", no?  Was radio really that timid in '79? I mean, Blondie said "pain in the ass'...

TANC: "Heart of Glass" appears.

Van Halen - Beautiful Girls
Charlie Daniels Band - The Devil Went Down to Georgia
Rainbow - Since You've Been Gone
Eagles - I Can't Tell You Why
Pink Floyd - Mother
Supertramp - Just Another Nervous Wreck
Cheap Trick - Ain't That a Shame
Electric Light Orchestra - Dont' Bring Me Down
ZZ Top - I Thank You
Blondie - Heart of Glass

The Drive's "new improved" website just went "live".

Wed 3/9/11: 1966

bet it goes to 11...

BOS the Shadows of Knight version of "G-L-O-R-I-A". Sam & Dave are holdin' on and comin'. As do most of us.

any other Kinks tune woulda got BOS2 but "Sunny Afternoon" will settle for a VHM. But always a BOS (and proxy of Irish Greg) "Wouldn't it Be Nice?"

VHM Neil D -- he's solitary, man. So's Mickey D, on the last train.

BOS3 and proxy of Gaz Raiders, "Hungry". Ah kin almos' TASTE it!  Dylan gets stoned, the Hollies get caught in the rain and the Troggs sing for Coke.

uber-BOS4 to my fave Beatle B-side, "Rain"

Shadows of Knight - Gloria
Sam & Dave - Hold On! I'm a Comin'
Kinks - Sunny Afternoon
Beach Boys - Wouldn't It Be Nice
Neil Diamond - Solitary Man
Monkees - Last Train to Clarksville
Paul Revere - Hungry
Bob Dylan - Rainy Day Women # 12 & 35
Hollies - Bus Stop
Beatles - Rain

tomorrow: celebrating Alexander Graham Bell's birthday a week late (WTF?) with "Telephone Songs". Here's hoping "Switchboard Susan" gives us an extension.

Thur 3/10/11: On the telephone

ah, Bell's B-day was last week but today's the anniv of the invention itself. No surprise that we start with ELO.

Hey Jenny: Bob's got yer number.

BOS1 Mr Croce's "Operator". Guess the Manhattan Transfer tune of the same name is too much to hope for.

aaack: Phunky Phil says "Don't Lose My Number" -- I assume Steely Dan will have a similar sentiment for us shortly.

wow: Foreigner's "Love On The telephone" may be an ATBB. VHMFRA. And sure enuf, the Dan arrive.

Figures they'd find a SRV song about a phone call  ::)

Blondie says "Call Me", mon cherie. And Sugarloaf make a predictable appearance.

long-distance information, get me an uber-BOS2 for Chuck Berry's orig "Memphis". More than that I cannot add!

Electric Light Orchestra - Telephone Line
Tommy Tutone - 867-5309 (Jenny)
Jim Croce - Operator
Phil Collins - Dont Lose My Number
Foreigner - Love on the Telephone
Steely Dan - Rikki Dont' Lose That Number
Vaughan Brothers - Telephone Song
Blondie - Call Me
Sugarloaf - Don't Call Us, We'll Call You
Chuck Berry - Memphis

Fri 3/11/11: 1974

Hoping for cheeze; they call Skynyrd the breeze. Proxy of GazWOS.

OMG! "Lakeshore Drive" -- a local Chicago fave and a big BOS from me for the LSD from Aliotta, Haynes & Jeremiah . Meanwhile, BTO are TCB. And Genesis are carpet munchers, er, crawlers.

Hot tramp! Oh Bowie, you "Rebel", you.

If you were expecting Supertramp... yer bloody well right.

always a BOS for Reunion. Mushroom omelete, Bonnie Bramlett! Easily one of my 5 favorite OHWs of all time. Ah need a breather.

BOS3 Stones, "Dance Li'l Sistah" -- on Thursday nite, she look a fright.

Crapton, if you shot the sheriff, then, er, it doesn't really matter whether you shot the deputy or not. You're fucked.

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Call Me the Breeze
Aliotta, Haynes & Jeremiah - Lakeshore Drive
Bachman Turner Overdrive - Takin' Care of Business
Genesis - Carpet Crawlers
David Bowie - Rebel Rebel
Supertramp - Bloody Well Right
Reunion - Life is a Rock
Doobie Brothers - Black Water
Rolling Stones - Dance Little Sister
Eric Clapton - I Shot the Sheriff
