Monday 6/20/05 - a Classic from... 1981
« on: June 20, 2005, 07:30:20 AM »
Dave's on vacay this week. So our discussion of a new improved Pride Set on Friday is probably moot.  Hope the other "classics" are worthy of the name.

Starting a 1981 set with "Su-Su-Sushi".  Yawn.

Damned Cow orker!  Came over to ask me some stupid self-evident question & made me miss one of my all-time favorite song intros!

BOS - "Lunatic Fringe"

...and a solid VHM for "Vienna"

LOL! Not a bad choice for a club theme song, Geoff!

(Lunatic Fringe... not Vienna. Which is a fine song, mind you)

Most Representative of Year goes to Franke and the Knockouts, "Sweetheart."  This soft-rock stylee is *exactly* how I remember 1981 sounding.
“The choir of children sing their song.  They've practiced all year long.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.”

Really?  To my ears they sound more Hall & Oates imitation.

While I appreciate Dave's fondness for XTC, I could stand to once in a while make it through 1981 without hearing them.

Seems to me the overall sound is clearly trying to evoke the McDonald-era Doobs, which was way hot at the time, even if the lead singer's vocal isn't a dead-on copy (there are hints of Mr Hall in his voice too).
