NTM: JJ plays yet another version of "Heaven Must Have Sent You", this time by the Continental 4. (Who?)

OMFG! the Dionne Warwick version of "Wishin' & Hopin' " -- a B-side in '63, which Dusty heard and loved and immediately covered.

always a highlight: JB, "There Was a Time".

There was a dance
They called the Jerk
Everybody relax
And watch me work!

and it's followed by fancy Miss Nancy Wilson doing a version of "Can't take My Eyes Off You"!  NTM and just sublime.

"Fancy Nancy Wilson" -- JJ just made that up, didn't he?  ;)  she sounded a little like Dinah Washington on that cut, I think.

That JB was good!

Teach the dance I used to do
They call it the Mashed Potato

JJ's Soul Sounds is a great show.  I always hear NTM stuff -- which isn't that hard considering the library he works with and my limited knowledge of soul.  For instance, The Impressions', I'm A Fool For You, very nice.  Loved the horns, the arrangement.

Nancy was somebody who was always around -- when i was a kid she was always popping up on variety and talk shows. It wasn't until I moved to SF and started hearing some of her old hits on KDIA (like "Guess Who I Saw Today" and "How Glad I Am') that I began to appreciate her. In the mid-'90s she did a wonderful cover of "I Can't Make You Love Me" (right after Bonnie's version but before it became a "new standard" and karaoke fave) that really made me take a second look. Her cover of "Ode To Billie Joe" from back in the day is pretty terrif.

But yes -- Dinah Washington was a *major* influence on her.

Well, I've posted some gobsmacking OMGWTFLOLs in these here threads over the years, but Offshore just played "Winterwood", a  VERY deep cut from Don McLean's American Pie LP. Wow and wow again.

an acceptable substitute for La radio de Sebb: another French internet outfit called "Nostalgie"

http://www.nostalgie.fr/

they have a number of channels and I've been listening to their Disco feed. I'll try the Soul channel this afternoon.

St Pat's on 'LNG: we just got "The Unicorn" (yay) and now it's a WTF-inducing rockabilly version of "Danny Boy" (!) by Conway Twitty (!!).

Listening to Li'l Steven's show; it's a salute to Jack Kerouac, and here's Taj Mahal's version of "6 days on the Road" -- amazingly, the first version of that oft-covered chestnut I ever heard, when i was a young music geek listening to NYC prog-FM in 1970 or so.
