CG/KPOO/KCDX etcetcetc for the week of 6/1/09

Judge is s-s-smokin'. Here's Odyssey with a lyric that's the polar opposite of "Rock Me Gently": "I want it to be so deep that you'll be turning me inside out". Er, ouch!

And check out the cheezy, Jheri-Curl-laden video!

MJ & his brothas Blame it on the Boogie. Which gives me yet another opportunity to type

"We spent the nite in 'Frisco
Macaulay brought the Crisco"

Never gets old for me ;)

ETA: HOLY CRAP! Judge is following it with the orig version by Mick Jackson (a Brit; no relation).  I've only heard this once or twice before.  It's sorta like ... was Paul Nicholas not available? LOL!

some young thing on PirateCat played some Boyd Rice.  NTM, gothy.

eta: I knew nothing about Boyd Rice, so looked him up.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4z50p2v5Of0

the lyrics are comically violent, but the melancholy music is dreamy.

then we had Ladybird from Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra.  Lee's stuff w Nancy (and his Cowboy in Sweden LP are great!)

Right now Pirate Cat Radio is helping the Ramones Beat On The Brat  -- what can you do?

earlier, KUSF gave us some Coachwhips, local thrashers.

only WLNG's Bob Shannon could play Englebert H back-to-back with Tiny Tim!

another NTM gem courtesy of WLNG; Hartford's own The Wildweeds (fronted by a pre-NRBQ Al Anderson), "No Good To Cry" from '67. Apparently this has been covered by the Box Tops, the Poppy Family and the Allmans -- but it sounds to me like the 4 Seasons shoulda picked up on it.

"No Good to Cry" has been in my all-time faves for years.  I discovered it via Barry Scott back in '01.  Musically I find it similar to the Strokes' first album, oddly enough.

Totally.  (Although I have actually never heard the original "Beggin'," only the house-ified remix that came out two summers ago (which I LOVED).  I need a Four Seasons comp that focuses on their later stuff (I despise "Walk Like a Man" and "Sherry" as much as I adore "C'Mon Marianne" and "Opus 17").

'LNG plays Tony Orlando, a decade before Dawn, with "Halfway to Paradise". Nick Lowe did a fab cover of this in the late '70s but I've searched everywhere for it to no avail.

aaaaack! (and sorta-TANC): 'LNG plays the Anita Bryant version of "Paper Roses" -- I can't remember the last time I heard hers (as opposed to the Marie Osmond remake).

"WLNG! ... <ding> ..."

so I just heard Eddie Vedder's version of Hide Your Love Away on LNG, but this deejay just mentioned that Paul, the longtime staion mgr (?), who died recently, loved PJ's Last Kiss.  Not sure if the deejay played that before Hide..., but glad I missed it in any case.

He didn't play "LK" thank gawd.  Radio trivia, re: the <ding!> -- legendary WABC had a similar jingle package, they'd sing the call letters after every song and there was a <ding!> after the call letters only if the song was in the top 14. (WABC was at 770 on the dial and so sevens entered into everything.)  'LNG just dings willy-nilly, which is rough if you're listening with a hangover.

ETA: Mah-Mo-Yeah! here come the 'berries, always in *my* top 14.
