The First Continental Congress convened on this date in 1774, in Philladelphia. Delegates from each colony except Georgia met in oppostition to the Intolerable Acts of Parlianment, which were themselves a reaction to the Boston Tea Party. The very earliest idea of a cohesive group of Americans was born here.
Just feeling really civic minded these days.
ETA: as a historian I would be remiss to fail mentioning that Sept 5th is also the anniversary of:
- The start of the Reign of Terror in the French Revolution
- The Treaty of Portsmouth which ended the Ruso-Japanese war (& garnered Teddy Roosevelt one of the first Nobel Peace Prizes).
- The Battle of the Marne in WWI
- The Black September hostage crisis at the Munich Olympics
